Situation:
You are working in the ED and are asked to see an 18-month-old infant that was brought into
the ED by mom due to increasing respiratory distress. The infant is to be admitted for 24-hour
observation.
Background:
18-month-old born at term.
Joshua had symptoms of a respiratory infection 48 hours ago. He has 2 siblings at home who
have also had these same symptoms. Yesterday, Joshua’s mom took Joshua to his pediatrician
and because of worsening respiratory distress she has brought Joshua to ED and he is going to
be admitted for 24-hour observation. Patient is irritable and fussy, but consolable by mom.
Mom had to step away from bedside to call her husband.

Recommendations:
We need to give Mom discharge teaching on how to administer medication through the nebulizer. She
also needs reinforcement of education on the importance of the medication and when to give it.
