Description
Implicit bias is not a new concept. According to Charlotte Ruhl (2020), it was first used by psychologists in 1995 to label the social behaviors that are influenced by unconscious attitudes and judgments. These attitudes and beliefs occur outside of our conscious awareness and can be difficult to control; they can also be in direct conflict with our conscious beliefs. It is also possible for implicit bias to become explicit bias when you become aware of the prejudices you possess and then act upon them.
As a public health practitioner, it is important to be aware of your explicit and implicit biases. Many of the module resources make it clear that bias can have both a positive and negative impact on the care you provide and the decisions you make. In this Discussion, you will explore implicit bias through self-reflection and the use of several online Implicit Association Tests (IAT). You will also consider the impact that awareness has on your role as a leader and your personal leadership philosophy

After each test, you should write your reflection. As a scholar-practitioner in the field of public health, you will consider:
What the results may reveal about your subconscious beliefs
How the results may impact your current or future role in the field of public health
How the results contribute to your personal leadership philosophy
Consider if the IAT assessment of implicit bias can effectively measure attitudes and beliefs as a method of self-assessment.
Note: It is important that you write your reflection after each IAT. After completing each test, you will see general distribution scores. You should use this to help reflect on your results. After you have completed each test and reflection, write your concluding remarks.
BY DAY 4 OF WEEK 5
Complete the assigned Implicit Association Tests (IAT). Write a post in which you respond to the following:
For each IAT, explain the new insights gained based on your results and how these insights impact your current or future role within the field of public health.
Explain how awareness of your specific implicit biases contributes to fostering a leadership philosophy that is inclusive of all, including diverse, marginalized, and vulnerable populations.
Explain the importance of self-assessment and self-reflection for effective leadership and how they contribute to your personal leadership philosophy.
