Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment, like all assignments in this course, is to help you prepare you to be a
successful nurse. The focus of this assignment is to reflect on your feelings and experiences in your OB
clinical rotation. Recall your “aha” moments during your 5 clinical days. And try to learn from them. This
assignment is not designed to be time consuming, but more about assisting you to think critically about
your clinical experiences, your feelings and how you can integrate this into providing patient care in the
future.
Skills:
The purpose of the journal is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your
success in this course:
• Clinical Outcome 1: Apply nursing and developmental theories to the care of the
childbearing woman and her family (AACN Essentials I, III, IX).
Knowledge:
The journal will also help you become familiar with the following important content knowledge
in this discipline:
• Recognize the importance of the clinical experience has in your professional experience
• Connect between the clinical experience and the learning experience
• Reflect and process how to integrate best practices going forward
Task:
To complete the assignment, please complete the following:
1. Complete at least one Reflective Journal for your 5 OB clinical days. This journal should be at
least two pages in length (double space).
2. Answer the following three questions in your journal (in this order).
a. What surprised you most during the OB clinical rotation?
b. Why does it matter?
c. How will you change your practice because of this surprise?
3. Post your reflective journal using the Journal Tab on Blackboard. Your journal is due at the end
of your 5 OB clinical days. This assignment is worth 10% of your course grade.
