Description
Teams shall assess & summarize the Ralph Prator (Sundial) Fountain on campus,
and redesign the hydraulic systems to perform as originally designed (noted below). The design
shall incorporate the three primary flow regimes as discussed in class, including A) the switchable
hourly flows in the flow channels that align with the Sundial Hour shade line; B) the single
upwards flow jet (representing the shade focal point) with three different calculated flow heights
(and the control piping / devices needed to control those varying heights); & C) the Primary flow
basin that maintains a fully wetted surface of the outer most concrete structure leading to the
subgrade primary basin.
Foundation Measurements:
4 1/2” outer curb
1’ 7” deep outter rock ring
5’ depth deep to top of wet wall
16” small rock pool depth + 10” to top of clock pool lip
2’ northridge sign arch height
5.9” deep top pond
6.6 h
4.2 adj (top)
Minimum Requirements:
1. Project Report shall include a 1 to 3 page descriptive introduction and summary of the
assessed conditions, any key assumptions for design performance, overview of the design
intent / goals, a descriptive guide to the final design and any nuanced lessons learned or
special features included (in the final design).
2. Project Report shall show all pipe sizing, types, total lengths, fittings, control devices,
pumps, etc. with a schematic detail.
3. Project Report shall show all flow & pressures needed to perform as designed, and shall
show all calculations to demonstrate proper design details.
4. Project Report shall clearly delineate the three primary flow regimes noted above, and
shall ALSO assess, summarize, detail (schematically), and calculate the performance of
the primary return water system along with the designed pump or pumps for a total
system design.
EXTRA DETAILS SHALL BE CONSIDERED FOR EXTRA CREDIT!!!
