Part 2:
The discipline of Philosophy is an attempt to give reasoned answers to fundamental questions that, because of their generality, are often ignored by the more specialized disciplines. Ethics, aesthetics, and metaphysics, three of the main divisions of philosophy, are closely related to the arts. Ethics is the philosophical study of morality, norms, and values, which have been a component of our course all along.
Many argue that any ethical argument that deals with morals and values but does NOT somehow incorporate the insights of the arts is inadequate. World renowned philosopher John Dewey even argued that art is more moral than any ethical theories. Dewey said:
They (the ethical theories) either are, or tend to become, consecrations of the status quo, reflections of custom, and reinforcements of the established order. The moral prophets of humanity have always been poets even though they spoke in free verse or by parable.
Initial post:
Choose one the artistic mediums that we have discussed in this course (painting, architecture, cinema, etc.) that you think might have the most relevance to an ethicist. In 150 words, describe WHY you think this medium is the most relevant for an ethicist. Be specific and offer at least one concrete example.
