Concepts

Learn about the Reformation and Exploration, a brief view of what is going on in the 1500’s. The main point is to see that Europe in the 16th century (1501-1600) is going through major changes. The struggle between Catholic and Protestant is inconclusive but bloody and on a global scale. Neither faith destroys the other, they realize by 1648 that they have to get along while trying to dominate the world. Europe at the start of this class in 1500 C.E. some five centuries ago was roughly speaking about the same wealth and power as other continents. Over the next four hundred years, the Europeans will become the wealthiest and most powerful continents on the planet. Much of this course is that story. The US, China and Japan will join the Europeans as world powers in the last century. Other countries like India, Iran, Indonesia, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia to name a few are trying to be more than just a regional power.
The planet progressed rather slowly in the first half of World History but in 1520, life is changing rapidly. Last week you learned about the Reformation and colonialism. This week the Industrial Revolution is transforming the world. Alexander the Great and George Washington could move an army at the same speed on land, they could only go as fast as a horse could move. People lived very similar lives from 500 C.E. to 1500 C.E. Between 1500 and 1800, technology changed and life was different. Daily life will change even more by 1900.
To add, just think how much we live differently than forty years ago? Do you make calls from a telephone booth? And, we will live differently in 20 years.
