About the Assignment
Throughout History 301, students have learned about the different writers, scholars, and
thinkers who have chronicled and explained historical events. Students will now use the
knowledge they have cultivated to write an essay in which they examine the development of
historical narratives from the Ancient World through the Middle Ages. This assignment requires
students to use their research, writing, and analytical skills to evaluate historians, historical
works, and how intellectual developments in the 17th and 18th centuries affected the telling of
the past.
Historiography from the Ancient World through
the Middle Ages
Students should compose a 2,000-2,250-word essay that assesses the development of history
as a subject and the historiography from the Ancient World through the Middle Ages. Your
essay should be in response to the following prompt:
Compare and contrast the historical works and contributions of three different historical
writers, with at least one having lived during the Ancient period and one having lived during the
Middle Ages. In particular, be sure to analyze and explain why you think their works and
contributions were significant to the development of history as an academic subject. For the
conclusion, include an evaluation of whether you think the Enlightenment had a notable
influence on the development of history in subsequent centuries.
