Mobile and IoHT/IoMT Devices and Healthcare Data Collection
Module 11– Mobile and IoHT/IoMT Devices and Healthcare Data Collection
The explosive growth of mobile phones even in the poorest remote communities can be
effectively used for healthcare data collection. Given their uniqueness, increasing
functionalities, and decreased acquisition and operational costs, mobile phones can be
employed for qualitative and quantitative data collection as numerical figures, text messaging
(SMS) and voice in responses to queries, forms completion, and survey questions. Another
category of low-cost portable devices with the potential for healthcare data collection are
wirelessly connected iPads and tablets. Yet another breed of healthcare data generation and
collection devices are IoHT/IoMT (Internet of Healthcare Things/ Internet of Medical
Things), and the interconnected IoT (Internet of Things) used in healthcare. These devices can
be employed in healthcare organizations for automatic and on-demand healthcare data
collection.
Module 11 Objectives:
After completing this module, you should be able to:
1. Evaluate the role of mobile devices (cell phones, iPad) in collecting healthcare data.
2. Analyze the types of healthcare data collected by mobile devices for health outcome
improvement.
3. Assess the usefulness of IoHT/IoMT devices in healthcare data collection.
4. Analyze how healthcare facilities can use IoHT/IoMT devices in improving revenue
management and healthcare service quality.

Assignment
The IoHT/IoMT devices can be deployed in healthcare facilities – hospitals, nursing homes,
home healthcare, etc. These devices can automatically collect healthcare data and feed it to
the central repository, like the EHR database. Evaluate the use of IoHT/IoMT devices for
improving patients’ outcomes through monitoring patients’ vital signs. How can these devices
be used to improve revenue management? What unique legal and regulatory challenges do
they face and how could they be overcome? Provide reasoning and examples.
Your APA formatted assignment comprising 2-4, double-spaced, typed in 12-point Times
New Roman (or 11- point Calibri) excluding the Cover and Reference pages should be
submitted by Tuesday mid-night. 2 credible sources minimum should be used to support your
ideas and conclusions.
Discussions
The IoHT/IoMT are interconnected sensor-based devices that collect and transmit healthcare
data to healthcare facilities’ EHR systems. Besides this benefit, they also have various
drawbacks. If you were a HIM manager in a local hospital, what type of health-related data
would you collect by using IoHT/IoMT devices? Being wireless, what data security do these
devices suffer from during data transmission to EHR? How would you overcome this
limitation? What compliance and liability issues does this process present to the organization?
How to minimize them? What are these devices’ prospects in improving data collection in
various healthcare settings (hospitals, nursing homes, home healthcare, etc.)? Provide your
reasoning.
