The name of the organization I chose is Women’s Rights- She The People. The social injustice that is the main focus is women with different color skin matter along with their votes and make their voices heard. I chose this organization because only a few people notice this is happening. Also, women should have the right to be heard and participate in what they want no matter of skin color. Everyone should be treated the same no matter where you are from and how you look. Every girl and woman should live to their full potential. The purpose of NOW, since its inception in 1966, has been to take action through an intersection between the grassroots activist movement and social change to promote women’s ideals, leading societal change, eliminating discrimination as well as achieving and protecting equality for all women and girls within every aspect of life. Women like to be treated as individuals, not dependent on a man That is why this organization was created. They’re looking for more opportunities to work and learn. The website “The National Organization for Women” that it states, it was founded on June 30th, 1966 by a group of activists who wanted to end gender discrimination. The organization is still a key component of the women’s rights movement today. They have many programs and projects. One of the programs is Violence Against Women Prevention and Support: Many women’s rights organizations conduct research and implement programs aimed at preventing and addressing violence against women. Programs may include hotlines, shelters, counseling services, and community outreach to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault. Another program is Reproductive Rights and Health Initiatives: Women’s rights organizations often focus on reproductive rights and health, researching issues such as access to contraceptives, maternal health, and family planning. This can also include efforts to address disparities in healthcare access for women in different regions.

Eduardo:

International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission. Their main focus is the betterment of LGBTIQ lives and advocate for their equality. I chose this organization because I believed it was the topic in which I was the least informed. So I decided to it could be fun to read about it and expand my knowledge on the topic. Their mission statement is “Outright is dedicated to working with partners around the globe to strengthen the capacity of the LGBTIQ human rights movement, document and amplify human rights violations against LGBTIQ people, and advocate for inclusion and equality.”

The Organization was started in 1990 by American activist Julie Dorf. At the time the Organization was called International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC). In 1993, after documenting over 1,200 murders of LGBT people in Brazil, IGLHRC supported the first successful sexual orientation asylum case. Now, IGLHRC officially changed its name to OutRight Action International.

In 2019, Outright launched a campaign to end conversion practices in Africa with regional partners. This was launching a global report on conversion therapy and documenting its harmful effects. In 2022, following the invasion of Ukraine, Outright was able to distribute 1.59 M USD in grants to support the LGBTIQ community though the Ukraine Emergency Fund as part of its Queering Humanitarian Response Initiative.

Marian:

“Why in Five” is an organization that focuses on women’s rights. I chose this organization because I believe that women are still being treated differently than men in many situations and a great example of that is the wage gap. The wage gap is still a thing to this day and many women get paid less than men even when they have the same level of education, this is because many places still believe that women aren’t able to work as well or hard as men and therefore they don’t believe in equal pay. This organization’s mission statement is to bring awareness to this issue and many other issues that women face such as wage equality, an end to domestic abuse, reproductive rights, maternity leave, equal rights, and much more. This organization was created to help women find solutions to the issues that they’re facing and they’ll do that by bringing up the challenges that they’re dealing with, then they follow it up with strategies that they can do to help fix these issues, which I believe is a solution that has worked in the past for other women. They also mention union membership which I believe is a group/program that you can join, and it talks about how it ensures women get treated equally, such as getting paid the amount they deserve based on their effort, skills, and education level. It also fights for fair treatment for workers and having a safe work environment. Pew Research Center also has an article called “gender pay gap in U.S. hasn’t changed much in two decades” (Aragao, 2023) article mentions how most women earn 82% of what men earn, doing the same job and working the same amount of hours. But it also shows us that over time that percentage is starting to go up. The article also mentions that when mothers work 67% of their focus goes to their responsibilities at home such as cleaning, cooking, and taking care of their kids, and for men, it’s only 45%.

Bruce:

National Civil Rights Museum

Their main focus is to share culture and lessons from the American Civil Rights movement and how it continues to shape equality and freedom. It started out as a way to remember Martin Luther King and to remember his legacy. But has blossomed into a bigger thing and has reached out further and further as time goes on.

I chose this organization because although this was a big era in our nation’s history, it isn’t quite talked about enough. At least with the people I’ve been around my whole life.

“The National Civil Rights Museum, located at the Lorraine Motel, honors and preserves the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We chronicle the American civil rights movement and tell the story of the ongoing struggle for human rights. We educate and serve as a catalyst to inspire action to create positive social change.”

It was initially established in 1991, in the former Lorraine Motel where M.L.K. was assassinated. It now houses many interactive exhibits, history collections, and has had special events. In 2013 and 2014, the museum went through renovations totaling 27.5 million dollars. As stated in the mission statement, it was created to preserve M.L.K.’s legacy and to serve as a catalyst to inspire action.

They currently have teacher workshops to help aid teachers in teaching sensitive topics regarding civil rights in the classroom. They also have compiled lesson plans for those wanting to just either do research or want to learn about this era.

Marcos:

What is the name of the organization? 1 point

The organization I chose is named “Poderistas” under the She the People link.

2. Which social injustice(s) is/are their main focus? (e.g., human trafficking, racial injustice, etc.) 2 points

The social injustice is that they focus on more is racial equality while gender inequality could be considered as well.

3. Why did you choose this organization? 3 points

I chose this organization because I am Latino. While I am a male, I am surrounded by family members who are Latinas. This struck my attention the most because I am surrounded more by this community and much of their focus is something I have seen frequently.

4. What is their mission statementLinks to an external site.? 3 points

Their mission statement is “to build a community that inspires, affirms, and informs Latinas in order to help Latinas harness our power and exercise our leadership, not just in our own lives and families, but also within our communities —and in all aspects of civic engagement. Together, we will conquer the world (Poderistas).”

5. Briefly describe the history of the organization. In other words, why was this organization created? 3 points

This is a relatively new organization that first began in August of 2020. This organization was created because of the number of Latinas who are not being heard. With their being large population of Latinos, this organization helps them feel safe to express their culture and not be scared of who they are for fear of judgment or criticism. This organization helps bring those voices to their communities to get rid of any stereotypes or adversity that they may face. Embracing culture is very important “Latinas and Latinos have spent centuries expressing and preserving these identities, which have all contributed to the culture of the United States(National Museum of the American Latino).” All races and ethnicities have contributed significantly to the United States, and Latinos are nothing short of that.

6. Describe research that they are working on and/or current projects/ programs that they have? Briefly describe 1-2 of these? 4 points

A program that they are currently working on is a program named “Cafecitio Chat”. In essence, this is like a sit-down where you sit with your coffee learning about “health and wellness, financial literacy, culture, self-love and confidence(Poderistas).” From my perspective, I like this idea because everybody likes going to a coffee shop to study, chat, or whatever it may be. Another program that they are working on is called “Salud y Poder”. This is a program that has been ongoing for 3 years straight and focuses on mental health. This includes events where you can go in person and also has different testimonies from other people who struggled with mental health. This is a very important and relevant event because nowadays it’s hard to find someone who does not struggle with their mental health.
