Global health is influenced by a number of factors, including access to resources, globalization, and an increasingly mobile society. Across the world, the health of individuals and populations share common concerns as a result of this interconnectedness. The United Nations established Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to target key determinants of health to reduce global health disparity and promote health equity for all.

The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a global health issue and examine the SDG that informs strategies surrounding the selected issue. Factors that influence the issue will be analyzed, and efforts aimed at addressing the issue will be examined locally and globally. Implications for advanced nursing practice will be identified.

In a 3 to 5- page paper, address the elements below. Use a minimum of 4 peer-reviewed scholarly sources, current within 5 years, to support your work. See rubric for specific, required content criteria within each section of the paper:

1. Provide an introduction to the paper.

2. Describe a selected global health issue, the factors that influence that health issue, and the impact of globalization on this health issue. Explain one SDG that targets the issue.

3. Discuss at least one local initiative and one global initiative to address this health issue. Explain how the local and global initiatives are similar and different, and how they align with the identified SDG to promote global health.

4. Describe opportunities for the MSN-prepared nurse to support the local and global initiatives identified. Propose one additional nursing strategy to address this issue and explain the intended impact of the proposed strategy on global health.

5. Provide a conclusion to the paper.

Please use the rubric attached, and I also attached an example.

Global Health Issue: Diabetes
Global health is a field of study aimed at improving health equally among people through
research and evidence-based practices. Global health issues include leading causes of death
globally, preventable diseases, clean food and water, climate change, and health equity and
security (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023b; World Health Organization
[WHO], n.d.). Organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have
advanced global health through the provision of vaccinations, healthcare screening and
treatment, and international response to epidemic outbreaks (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention [CDC], 2017). More than the work of one or two organizations is needed to tackle the
extensive nature of global health disparities. Global problems require global solutions from all
sectors, economic, social, cultural, and environmental. This paper aims to discuss the prevalence
of diabetes as a global health issue.
Diabetes Prevalence
Diabetes is categorized into three main types, namely type 1, type 2, and gestational
diabetes. While the root cause of type 1 diabetes is pancreatic dysfunction, type 2 diabetes results
from insulin resistance, and gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy. The most essential
factors in the development of type 2 diabetes are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle (Khan et al.,
2019; Lin et al., 2020). Similarly to type 2 diabetes, pregnant women with increased body mass
indices are also more likely to develop gestational diabetes, which concurrently increases their
risk for the development of post-partum type 2 diabetes (Thamban & Venkatappa, 2020).
Globalization has been associated with an increased consumption of processed foods and foods
high in glucose, which has increased the prevalence of obesity and diabetes (Cuevas GarcíaDorado et al., 2019).
3
There are over 400 million people worldwide, 37 million in the United States, and 300
thousand people in Colorado with diabetes (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2022;
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2023a; World Health Organization [WHO],
2023). Diabetes is the ninth-leading cause of death in the world and the eighth-leading cause of
death in the United States (CDC, 2023a; WHO, n.d.). With diabetes being a leading cause of
mortality and its prevalence increasing worldwide, it is a significant global health risk (Khan et
al., 2019; Lin et al., 2020; Thamban & Venkatappa, 2020). The United Nations committed itself
to helping reduce the cases of diabetes globally. The primary strategy that the UN adopted was
meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.4.1 to reduce deaths from noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes (United Nations [UN], n.d.).
Strategies to Reduce Diabetic Burden
As part of Healthy People 2030, the United States has outlined multiple goals to address
the diabetes health crisis. General goals are aimed at reducing the number of diabetes diagnoses
each year, reducing mortality from diabetes, and reducing the number of hospital admissions
(Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion [ODPHP], n.d.). Other interventions are
aimed at reducing complications by increasing diabetes management education for people with
diabetes, improving blood glucose monitoring and insulin administration, ensuring yearly eye
exams, reducing diabetic retinopathy, and reducing the number of people with diabetes requiring
amputations (ODPHP, n.d.).
The World Health Organization has launched a campaign to combat the rising global
prevalence and mortality of diabetes. The Global Diabetes Compact is a multi-nation forum that
was assembled to reduce the risk and complications of diabetes through equitable and affordable
healthcare globally (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). The critical components of the
4
Global Diabetes Compact are stakeholder collaboration; access to integrative diabetes
prevention, screening, treatments, and education; closing gaps in diabetes research; increased
funding for refugees and those displaced by natural disasters; and progress with international
goals tracked (WHO, 2021).
The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals align with the WHO Global
Diabetes Compact and the United States Healthy People 2030 initiatives. There are multiple
initiatives outlined by Healthy People 2030 and the WHO Global Diabetes Compact to reduce
morbidity and mortality from diabetes; these align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal
3.4.1, which reduces mortality from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.
Advanced Nursing Practice
Advanced nursing practice is essential in promoting global health. MSN-prepared nurses
have the decision-making and leadership qualities necessary to bring change to the local,
national, and global health stage. Two pillars of holistic nursing care are patient education and
advocacy. Advanced practice nurses can advocate for patients through participation in diabetes
research, community organizations, and national and international coalitions on diabetes care
initiatives. Additionally, master’s prepared nurses have training in learning theories and methods
and can provide diabetes management education.
Diabetes self-management education is a strategy that is becoming a popular strategy to
assist people with diabetes in reducing complications of diabetes by maintaining healthy blood
glucose levels through lifestyle changes, medication management, and blood glucose monitoring.
Nurse-led diabetes self-management education is effective in improving HgbA1c, increasing
patient self-efficacy in disease management, and improving blood pressure and blood glucose
levels (Azami et al., 2018; Kumah et al., 2021; Lee et al., 2019).
5
Conclusion
Global health is a consolidation of economic, social, and environmental factors that affect
the health of nations and their individuals worldwide. Preventable diseases, non-communicable
diseases, environmental conditions, poverty, access to healthcare, and access to quality food and
education are a sample of global health concerns. Organizations such as the World Health
Organization and the United Nations have set goals and developed initiatives to improve health
globally. Healthy People 2030 is a decades-long plan in the United States to reduce disease
burden, mortality, and overall quality of life. Diabetes is a disease with rising prevalence and
serious and mortal complications, making it a priority global health concern.
