GEOS 5120 – Principles of Hydrogeology
Homework #7
The USGS Ground Water Atlas: https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/ha730/ divides the ground water flow
systems of the United States into thirteen regions. Discuss the following in a word or similar
word processing document for the region containing Michigan (our local geology) and an
additional region of your choosing:
1. General geologic overview of the region (2-3 paragraphs)
2. Climate information (1 paragraph)
3. General hydrogeology of the region including major aquifer systems (1-2 paragraphs)
4. Ground water withdrawal rates and categories of ground water utilization (e.g., public
supply, domestic and commercial, agricultural, industrial, etc.) (1-2 paragraphs)
5. Select two of the aquifers or aquifer systems and describe the geology and depositional
environment, geologic age(s), hydraulic conductivity/transmissivity, etc. and thickness of
these aquifers (~2-3 paragraphs per aquifer system)
Notes:
• Repeat items 1-5 for each of the two regions so that each region is described separately;
the paragraph estimates are intended for a single region.
• The Regional Summary link in the GW Atlas contains the majority of the information for
items 1-4 above.
• Aquifer or Aquifer Systems for each region are defined below the Regional Summary
link as separate links. For example, HA 730-B includes California and Nevada and is
comprised of Basin and Range aquifers, Central Valley aquifer system, Coastal Basins
aquifers, Northern California basin-fill aquifers, and Northern California volcanic-rock
aquifers. You only need to select two of these to complete item 5 above.
• The GW Atlas for each region was published between 1990 and 1999, and subsequently
total withdraw rates and categories of utilization are significantly outdated.
• It’s fine to report the (non-SI) units as reported in the Atlas.
• Include two relevant figures of your choosing, see windows snipping tool.
