General Unknown Report
Unknown Sample # 44256
Cations Present
Ag+
Cu+2
Al+3
Fe+3
Ba+2
Cations Not Present
Co+2
Ni+2
Mn+2
Cr+3
Mg+2
Ca+2
Discussion
For each of your cations that you said was present, write a paragraph stating the procedure used to test
for the cation and your observations that led you to conclude that you had the cation. Then write out
the balanced equation that reflects how you tested for the ion. You can write out the net ionic equation.
The following is an example:
Identification of Ag+:
The supernatant for the Ni group was placed into a 10 ml beaker, 2 drops of 15 M of nitric acid was
added and the solution was heated until dry. A bluish/white film evolved. To the beaker, 28 drops of
15 M nitric acid was added to fully dissolve the solid. The solution was then distributed to between 4
test tubes. To test for Ag+, in one of the test tubes 6M HCl was added. A white cloudy ppt that could
indicate silver chloride evolved. After centrifuging this solution, a white powdery ppt could be seen on
the side and bottom of the test tube. This same white powdery ppt was also seen in the known solution
that was also tested for Ag+
A spot test of AgNO3 with 6M HCl also produced a white powdery ppt at the bottom of the test tube
Silver
Ag+(aq) + Cl-(aq) ® AgCl(solid, white)
