Final Project Proposal, Creative Track
The purpose of this assignment is to propose a final project that creatively interacts with philosophical
ideas. The student has broad leeway to choose the medium and topic of their project, although it must
be on topic for the course material (I chose the topic of “Free Will”). For example, the project could be a work of
visual art, a video, a work of creative writing, or a computer program (Use the movie “Truman Show”) The proposal will consist in
three parts: a 300 word abstract of an ‘explainer’ essay that will say why this project is philosophically
interesting; a description of the project, the materials that will be used in its creation, and the
background/context of its philosophical interest, and; a bibliography of 7 sources informing this
background and context. Each of these components will be worth 10 points, distributed as follows:
Abstract (10)
– clearly identifies the philosophical question the project will explore (3)
– clearly identifies the answer to this question the student favors (3)
– clearly identifies how the project could advance the discussion of that question (3)
– proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation (1)
Description (10)
– identifies the medium of the project (1)
– content of the project is clearly explained and achievable (4)
– identifies the materials to be used in the project (1)
– gives the background/context of the project’s philosophical dimension (3)
– proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation (1)
Bibliography (10)
– includes 15 sources (3)
– sources are appropriate/scholarly (5)
– bibliography is formatted according to a recognized style guide (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago,
etc) (2)
Extra Credit (2)
– students who annotate their bibliographies with at least a 200 word summary accompanying
each source will receive 2 points of extra credit
