Photo or Video Essay (15 % of Final Mark)

Description:

Throughout the semester, you learned about the universe, the solar system, the Earth’s history, geologic processes, and earth materials. Now, your task will be to take on the role of a field scientist to investigate local impacts and processes in your local environment and create a photo or video essay about those processes. You will be embedding your photos or video into your final product.

Your Task:

Using a digital camera, take a hike around the community. You may either take pictures or video impacts and processes found in your local environment. Please make sure that you do this while there is still day light. I don’t want you going out in the dark! It would be best if you did during the day on a weekend!!!

Select 2 categories from the list below that interest you and take one digital photograph or video that shows an aspect of that category.
The categories that you will choose from, as as follows: Geological land forms or processes, 2) rock formation, 3) mineral/metal extraction or processing, 4) objects in the night sky, and/or 5) human impacts on the environment such as remediation techniques to protect the environment.
JUST SO I KNOW, YOU ARE NOT SUBMITTING IMAGES FROM THE INTERNET, PLACE AN IDENTIFIER SOMEWHERE IN EACH OF YOUR PICTURES(i.e your foot, a friend, your bike, backpack, or yourself).

NOTE: Be sure to resize your pictures or video and embed them in the report. In the past, some files have not gotten through to me due to their large size. Or else, send your assignments in chunks..(i.e. part 1 separate from part 2).

Please note: If you are planning on completing a video, please use your Halton email account and upload your video to Youtube. Share the link with me from Youtube! This is the easiest method in sharing videos!

For each image reflect on associated unit concepts, demonstrate your understanding of the concept, do some research, and write a brief caption describing the image from an Earth and Space Scientist perspective (200 – 400 words). Make sure to include the below information as well in your caption if your picture comes from that category.

If you are completing a video, you may complete your description orally in your video narration!

Categories:

1. Geological processes

Describe the geological landform or process that formed the image, possibly include some history/ information about what created the region from geological eras of the synopsis.(Include and make references to the images.)

2. Rocks

Investigate a local environment (e.g., river bed, rock outcrop, nature trail, etc.) and describe and identify the types of rock at each location. Analyse the rock (you might use a hand lens and describe texture, stratification, crystalline structure, minerals, and colour).

3. Mineral/Metal extraction or resources

Describe the positive and/or negative impacts on society of the process. Research what the resource is used for and it’s impacts on society.

4. Object in the night sky

Only do this if you plan on taking a picture of a larger astronomical object on a tripod (constellation, orion nebulae, moon, pleades) or on the back of a teelescope that you have access to. Describe the type of object, it’s properties, and its place in the formation of an object in the universe.

5. Human impacts on the environment

Describe human impacts on the environment for the particular image. For example, how does the structure built to prevent soil erosion helpful to the local environment?
