Field Observation #6:
Silent Spring
Directions: Rachel Carson opens Silent Spring with a “fable for tomorrow” in which a once
idyllic town has been destroyed by a “grim specter” which has “silenced the voices of spring.”
Both here and in the title of her book she emphasizes the value of the sounds of nature, sounds
that are a sign of a healthy ecosystem. For this week’s field observation, I would like you to
focus on the sounds that you hear while outside. Select a spot outdoors where you can sit or
stand still for 30-45 minutes. As you observe the environment around you, pay particular
attention to the sounds that you hear. Try and describe them as best you can and consider the
emotions, memories, thoughts, or questions that some of these sounds evoke in you. How did
you respond to these sounds? Which are familiar, which unfamiliar? Try to imagine what it
would be like if these sounds were suddenly silenced.

Field Observation #8:
Imitate the Style of…
Directions: As practice for your Creative Nonfiction Essay assignment, I’d like you to use this
week’s field observation as an opportunity to write in the style of one of the authors we have
read so far this semester. Select one of the authors we have read so far (Thoreau, Austin,
Leopold, Carson, or Harris) and imagine that you are them. Go outside for your observation
assuming the role of Thoreau, Austin, Leopold, Carson, or Harris and select a specific place to
conduct your observation. Observe your environment through the eyes of your chosen author and
then write a description and reflection as if you are them, imitating their style and echoing their
particular concerns or ways of seeing/observing. At the beginning of the assignment, please
indicate the author that you have chosen to imitate.
