Assignment Overview:
The assignment will require you to identify a cognitive neuroscience topic of interest to you, to
research the primary (and peer-reviewed) literature on this topic, and to write an original
proposal describing the historic and recent background on the topic, to identify important
unanswered question(s), and to propose a plan of experiments to address these question(s). Thus,
the assignment presents the opportunity for you to gain depth of knowledge in an area of
cognitive neuroscience that is personally interesting to you. The assignment goal is for you to
integrate your education, abilities, and interests through a written project.
Task:
1) The first step is for you to identify a topic for your proposal. The topic must be primarily
based in the field of cognitive neuroscience. The tasks and focus must be cognitive in
nature.
Suggestion: Make a list of 3-5 topics of interest. Use your Table of Contents from your
textbook to get ideas. I would have this list made by 10/20.
2) The second step is to identify, collect and read the background literature on the topic. If
you are not familiar with using PsychInfo and finding peer-reviewed or review articles,
you will need to find time to learn those skills. Going to speak to a librarian and/or
meeting with me one-to-one will be the most effective and useful. The number of
articles that you will need to read depends on how many review papers you read. Review
papers sum up many experiments (decades of work typically). To get a historical
background, a Review paper is a good place to start, and then, typically, 3 or 4 peerreviewed empirical papers will provide a good background for your level. If you can’t
find a Review article, then 5-7 peer reviewed empirical articles will usually be a good
starting point.
Suggestion: Spend some time on PsychInfo looking through articles on the topics from
your list. What topic can you find a Review article for? What topic has a historical and
contemporary set of literature? What articles are from journals that specifically use terms
like “neuroscience” and “cognitive science” and “cognitive psychology”? This step will
help you narrow down your topic and make the task of finding the literature manageable.
I would have my articles collect or ordered by 10/27. If you are unable to get an article
immediately, this is the time to email me with the APA citation and ask for assistance. As
the articles are sent to you, begin to read the articles, look up terms, ask questions, and
make notes.
3) The third step will be to write the historical and recent background section of the research
proposal, without your experimental plan. This is commonly referred to as a literature
review or the Introduction of a paper. You have completed Research Methods, so this
type of task should be review. If not, meeting with me one-to-one might be necessary.
This is a time consuming and difficult task. Be sure to spend a significant amount of time
reading, and then writing.
Suggestion: I would have a second draft to take to a peer or writing center by 11/10.
4) The fourth and final step will be to write your experimental plan and make any necessary
revisions to your background section to pull both parts together as a coherent and
complete research proposal. An experimental plan consists of a design, an explanation of
subject/participation assignment (if applicable), relevant descriptions of
subjects/participants, and detailed description of the procedures for your design.
Suggestion: I would have a good final draft to take to the writing center or a peer by
11/15. You will then have the weekend to clean up any last-minute tasks and upload to
Brightspace.
