Lab 2 question: Generating 50 samples using a normal distribution with µ = 100 and SD
= 10.
Each sample contains 40 numbers. Construct 90% and 99% confidence intervals. Count how many “bad”
intervals do you get in this 50 intervals.
Guide of Excel:
1 Setup Data Analysis: Open the Excel Options dialog box by clicking on the File menu from the main
ribbon and then clicking on Options. Click on the Add-ins menu in the Excel Options dialog box.
In the Manage box, select Excel Add-ins and then click Go. In the Add-Ins box, check the Analysis
ToolPak check box, and then click OK.
2 Click the Data Analysis button under the Data menu, choose Random Number Generation.
3 Number of Variables: number of samples you want to observe; Numbers of Random Numbers: your
sample size n; Distribution: Binomial; p Value: p; Number of trials: N .
4 After generalizing lots samples, calculate their sample means using commend “=AVERAGE”.
5 Calculate the mean and standard deviation of those sample means using commends “=AVERAGE”
and “=STDEV.S”.
6 You can calculate sample means, margin errors, the lower and upper bounds of your confidence
intervals in separate lines as I did in class
