Chapter 2 – The State – Country Selection/Evidence Log
The purpose of this assignment is to apply the concepts addressed in the text to the country
you chose to study this term. Please be sure to answer BOTH questions 1 and 2 below.
1. Which country will you be focusing on this term? Why did you choose
this country?
I’d like to learn more about the biggest democracy in the world. India’s long political past, varied
culture, and complicated government systems make it an interesting place to study politics. Its
complex political system, including a multiparty system, a federal structure, and the way
different social and political forces interact, interests me. By studying India, you can learn a lot
about the problems that come up in democracies, how societies work, and how tradition and
technology interact in a political setting.
2. Please complete the Evidence Log below.
(The evidence column should include properly cited references to the textbook. The
application column should include information about your chosen country and include
properly cited references to independently researched sources. Please also include a works
cited notation at the bottom of the page, listing the textbook and all other sources you
consult.)

“What exactly do we mean by state?
Political scientists, drawing on the
work of the German scholar Max
Weber, typically define the state as
the organization that maintains a
monopoly of force over a territory.”
STATE
REGIME
This passage shows how important
states are for keeping things in order,
exercising their power, and turning
political ideas into laws. States are the
only ones who can use armed and
police power to enforce the law and
keep people safe in their own
countries. The institutional structure
includes armies, police, ministries, and
offices. This makes states more
complicated because they are
responsible for many things. In the
eyes of the public, states are real and
necessary organizations that do more
than keep the peace to protect
people and meet their needs.
Legitimacy of the state is seen as
important for security and continuity.
States are hard to change because
they are deeply institutionalized. They
can survive disasters and revolutions.
States are very important for
government, safety, and the
well-being of society. They also show
strength when things go wrong.
What are the defining characteristics
of a regime?
What type of regime is present in the
state you chose to study this term?
Be sure to mention each of the
defining characteristics of a regime.
