Essay
My Juxtaposition project was inspired by the butterfly element and the phenomena and
images generated by marine pollution. Butterflies were chosen because of their innate variety of
patterns and colours that can be used as a rich design resource for the whole project. The choice
of ocean pollution was also inspired by my undergraduate teacher, who always encouraged us to
pay more attention to the environment and environmental protection, and to use more renewable
materials. At the same time, there is a great contrast between butterflies and oceans. Butterflies
are small, fragile and beautiful, ocean pollution is huge and desperate, but the beauty of
butterflies comes from the rebirth and metamorphosis of caterpillars, while ocean pollution is
desperate and produces a lot of beautiful phenomena. These two elements seem to have nothing
to do with each other, but there are many similarities in principle, which makes me very
interested, and I want to find out more about the similarities between the two through research
and combine and develop them.
Butterfly is a classic pattern in printed textiles, and there are various butterfly prints and
textiles on the market. I chose not to use the whole butterfly, but to extract elements from the
butterfly and develop them by combining them with elements extracted from marine pollution to
enrich the silhouette and details of the project.
In the later stages of the project, I gradually realised that there were some issues that I
needed to reflect on. Firstly, the lack of research at the beginning led to a lack of inspiration at
the end, and too many similar elements between the designs. Due to the lack of time at the
beginning, in order to catch up with the progress I reduced the scope of the research in the early
stage. Regarding the butterfly, I just used the original lines and the elements that originally
appeared on the butterfly, such as the butterfly’s pattern and the black mesh graphic. The further
processing and integration of these elements were neglected. Secondly, the research on marine
pollution was too late, which led to a lot of research elements not being used in the end. For
example, the combination of the butterfly’s mesh pattern and the fishing net element of marine
pollution in the process of development could have developed more interesting patterns, but they
were too similar in the process of combination. At the same time for the research of these two
inspirations I neglected their pre-development and process. For example, in the case of the
butterfly, I missed the process of the butterfly’s transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly,
which is very much in line with my theme of “rebirth”, and the pattern of the caterpillar’s body
and the cocooning process are also very much worthy of research.
Part2
Re design:
The source of inspiration I chose from plants and flowers in project 2 is the climbing
vine, on the one hand it is because the trunk of climbing vine is very special in nature, its trunk
can be twisted and meandering, there are a lot of climbing vines in my hometown, and they are
used very much in urban greening, so I can say that they can be seen everywhere, and at the
same time, the repetitive nature of climbing vines and the twisting of the vineman make me feel
that the combination with the African elements is also very compatible. The combination of
African elements is also very similar.
In Project 2, I learnt more techniques to complete the final work and made more attempts.
In Project 2 I clearly felt that I was more interested and enjoyed myself more than in the first
project due to the increase in the number of techniques available to me. When trying to make the
same pattern using different techniques, the different effects produced by the different techniques
further gave me new directions. At a later stage I combined two or three techniques, or combined
two patterns to create a new pattern. But this also led to another problem, perhaps because of my
own poor drawing ability, I instinctively avoided some of the hand-drawn parts of the project,
resulting in a very small amount of hand-drawing in Project 2, and most of the time I used block
prints or other techniques to achieve the pattern I needed.
