Many people who are physically challenged. They have accomplished much. Which
proves that they are not “handicapped.” Confined to wheelchairs, successful careers have
been forged by Bob Sampson and Stephen Hawking. Despite Sampson’s muscular
dystrophy, he has earned a law degree he has also worked for United Airlines for more
than thirty years. Stephen Hawking most famous for his book A Brief History of Time.
Unable to speak, Hawking’s voice synthesizer allows him to dictate his books and
conduct public lectures. And teach mathematics classes at Cambridge University.
Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ann Adams, and Itzhak Perlman all refused let polio destroy
their lives. Indeed, Roosevelt led the United States during two of the worst periods of its
history as President. The Great Depression and World War II. Reassured by his strong,
firm voice, Roosevelt inspired hope and determination in the American people. Ann
Adams, who was talented in art before polio paralyzed her, knew she had to continue to
be one. Having retrained herself to draw with a pencil grasped in her teeth. She produces
sketches of children and pets. That were turned into greeting cards. The profits from the
cards sustained her. Roosevelt and Adams were stricken with polio when they were
adults; Itzhak Perlman when a child. He was unable to play sports, instead he studied the
violin, now many think he is greater than any violinist in the world.
Like Perlman, many physically challenged individuals turn to the arts. Perhaps the
reason is because the joy of artistic achievement compensates for other pleasures they

cannot experience. Stevie Wonder, José Feliciano, and Andrea Bocelli all express,
through their music, their souls. Although unable to see physically, their music reveals
truly how well they see. Hearing impairment struck Ludwig van Beethoven and Marlee
Matlin it did not stop them from developing their talents. Already a successful composer,
many of Beethoven’s most powerful pieces were written after he became deaf. Similarly,
Matlin has had excellent acting roles in movies, plays, and television programs, indeed
she won an Oscar for Children of a Lesser God. She encourages others to develop their
ability, and many hearing-impaired actors have been inspired by her.

Up, down … sideways even. The latest crime statistics have something for everyone and
have led to some confusion.
there is not just one set of figures but two.
The recorded crime statistics reflect those offences in the official figures compiled by the
43 police forces in England and Wales.
the British Crime Survey (BCS) is based on interviews with the public. This
4
year is the largest sample ever at more than 30,000 people having taken part.
The BCS picks up crimes that may not be reported to the police like low-level assaults
and criminal damage. To further add to the complexity, police forces are beginning to
adopt a new set of standards over the way they record crime.
This, according to the government’s number crunchers, adds a 5% increase to the
recorded crime figures.
These figures also include information on the public perception of crime and police
detection rates which, on the face of it, seem to vary widely.
The government is not making too much of that fact but merely says police officers
should be questioning why detection rates in similar areas should be different.
the recorded crime figures (after subtracting the 5% increase for new reporting
criteria) crime overall has increased by 2%.
, the British Crime Survey says it has fallen by 2%. The line from the
government is that this reflects a stable situation, with crime not increasing after several
years of declining crime figures, in particular 14% down since 1999.
within that overall picture by picking a year in the past, the government has
been able to point to significant declines in certain types of crime.
according to
the British Crime Survey, domestic burglary is down by 39% since 1997.
It also maintains that the chances of being a victim of crime remain at around the lowest
levels since the British Crime Survey came into being in 1981.
, robbery – demanding or taking something with the use or threat of violence has apparently soared by 28% according to the Recorded Crime figures compared with
the previous year. The British Crime survey shows this type of offence at even higher
levels but government statisticians say the comparison is not as fair because of a
relatively small sample the year before.
robbery only represents 2% of total crime, street crime is a politically high
profile issue. More than 40% of street crime happens in London – and it is a crime that
has a strong impact on the victim.
The government believes this rise is fuelled by a combination of teenagers preying on
other young people, thefts of mobile phones on the streets and crime fuelled by the use of
class A drugs like heroin and crack cocaine.
The Metropolitan Police recently released some figures that appeared to show the
government’s street crime initiative, launched in February, is reducing street crime.
Something the government will want to see everywhere else when the next crime figures
are released.
Exercise 3
Imagine these 2 paragraphs are part of a larger essay on Wendy’s. Your job is to:
1. Insert transitional words & phrases within the FIRST PARAGRAPH to make it
more cohesive & less choppy. To do so, you’ll need to determine what kind of
relationships exist between sentences and phrases & choose transitions that are
appropriate. You may change punctuation as needed.
5
2. Provide a smooth transition sentence to begin the SECOND PARAGRAPH and
smoothly connect it to the preceding paragraph. “Also” doesn’t cut it. Neither
does the more grammatically correct “In addition…” (Notice the good transition
that opens the 1st paragraph).
In spite of such negative statistics, I will continue to frequent Wendy’s in the
Student Union building. The fries are excellent. They are rarely too greasy. They are
usually fresh and crispy. They aren’t too crispy. The burgers are sizzling hot. The
warmth of the burger is accentuated by the coolness of the mayonnaise & other
condiments. A Frosty makes a good dessert. Dinner at Wendy’s is not healthy. The food
tastes great.
Also, Wendy’s has great service. I particularly appreciate the lightening-fast finger
work of the Wendy’s cashier as he punches students’ orders into the magic box. When
he quickly enters my order, I am confident that he takes his work very seriously.
Likewise, the other Wendy’s employees are professional & courteous. They too
acknowledge the need to work quickly & effectively, and their service reflects such an
understanding.
