Description
The Syllabus for the essay with expectations on how the essay should be written will be attached. Also, the thesis statement, research question, the sources and quotes that will be included in the essay will also be attached below. Essay should be written formally, so avoid contractions( ex: would’ve is wrong, would have is correct), informal words and phrases(ex: math exam is wrong, mathematics examination is correct), slang( if used put it in quotes, if used in quote put it in bracket), shortened words(grad is wrong, graduate is correct), two word verbs (grow up –> mature), and numbers( write out numbers with four words or fewer). Provide context before and after quotes. The thesis statement needs to be debatable, specific, and complex. For the work cited page and for citing quotes throughout the text in the essay, use MLA style 9th edition.

Quotes: “A boost in divorce rates in the 1960s didn’t help matters either, as suddenly single
parents felt uninspired by the thought of tackling a family trip on their own. And then there
were the hippies, with their rebellious attitude toward capitalistic conformity and their
overwhelming disinterest in the thought of settling down to lead a “station wagon-filled
suburbia existence.”” (Culture, practical considerations, lifestyle needs, evolving stereotypes)
“Flash forward another decade to the 1970s, and things aren’t much better for the wagon, as
the oil crisis that put many family road trips on the back-burner gave way to an increased
popularity in the compact car. The 1980s were about the same, as they ushered in a wildly
popular family car called “the minivan,” followed by the marketing of the full-sized SUV toward
suburban housewives. By the 1990s, SUVs were leading minivans in sales due to their fourwheel drive capabilities, ruggedness, and cabin space.” (Cultural consideration, practical
considerations, changing lifestyle needs)
“there are still quite a few wagons being produced for the American market, and what’s more is
that some of them are actually selling. Here are a few winners we found that might just hold the
line until we see a wagon-rich renaissance once more.
It is important to note that not all of these cars will fit the exact preconceived mold of a
traditional wagon. Constantly evolving technologies, designs, and customer preferences are
powerful forces, and these cars reflect these trends, starting with the 2015 Volvo V60. With its
sporty handling, roomy interior, available integrated booster seat, 30 miles per gallon efficiency,
and notorious Volvo safety ratings, it is no wonder the Swedish-based company continues to
market and sell this kind of car to Americans. Critics are raving about this car and say that it
could be the perfect car for bringing wagons back into the mainstream, and even Car and Driver
says “it’s the poster car for its class.”” (Economic Considerations)
“According to a report by the U.S. government Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
obesity has “quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” and since a lot of these kids are
considered “likely to be obese as adults,” their role in America’s car buying trends has to tip the
scales.” (Cultural)
“There are a few factors that could bring the wagon back into mainstream favor, with exterior
design preferences, fuel costs, and a change in demand from the next generation of auto buyer
being at the forefront. While efficient economy cars are cute and practical to a point, Millennials
and Generation Z car owners will eventually realize that there is little room in these compact
cars for baby seats, spouses, groceries, friends, dogs, and many other items that end up needing
transportation. These drivers are also going to start developing their own grown-up tastes, as
they realize that it might be time do away with that fun little car from college, and upgrade to a
family car with better safety and roomier interior.”(Evolving Stereotypes- replacement for
sedans and a better option than SUVs)
Volvo to end station wagon sales in U.S. (talks about crossovers)

Quotes: “Volvo sold only 1,720 V50s last year[2010], down from a peak of 5,486 in 2005.”
(Economic)
“”Over the last decade the traditional station wagon segment has been on a decline,” Speck
said. “Through that period the crossover segment has grown exponentially. The reality is the
crossovers of today are the wagons of yesteryear.”” (evolving stereotypes)
Press Release: Volvo Car Launches New V90 BiFuel Station Wagon

Quotes:
“Westport Fuel Systems Inc. (“Westport”) (TSX:WPT / NASDAQ:WPRT), a premier global
company for the engineering, manufacturing and supply of alternative fuel systems and
components, today announced that Volvo Car will launch the BiFuel version of its new V90
station wagon. This vehicle is based on the same engine technology as the Volvo V60 sports
wagon which recently won second place in the Best Environmental Car in Sweden – company car
category.” (Fuel Economy, Emissions concerns)
“”Westport and Volvo Car are working together to provide customers with leading natural gas
technology, great performance and ultimately a low-emissions profile. By collaborating with
OEMs, like Volvo Car, we are able to develop vital technology solutions to reduce emissions and
continue to meet demand for premium natural gas vehicles,” said Nancy Gougarty, President
and COO of Westport.” (Fuel Economy, Emissions concerns)

Quotes:
“But despite their very American pedigree, station wagons are proving highly resistible to U.S.
consumers, who are migrating en masse from sedans to crossovers and SUVs, without a stop in
between.” (Stereotypes)
“While U.S. wagon sales overall have stayed stable — 188,959 in 2015, vs. 190,101 in 2000,
according to figures from market analysts JATO Dynamics — it’s the premium segment that’s
hollowing out.
A category that once included wagon versions of the Saab 9-5, Saab 9-3, Lexus IS, Audi A4, Audi
A6, Mercedes C class and Acura TSX is now limited to just the Volvo V60, Volvo XC70, Mercedes
E class, BMW 3 series and Audi Allroad. U.S. sales of premium wagons sank to just 19,985 last
year, from 62,218 in 2000, JATO said.
Meanwhile, luxury brands have vastly expanded their offerings of crossovers in small, medium,
large and even coupelike formats, while Subaru has gobbled up a massive chunk of the
mainstream wagon market.
What’s the secret to Subaru’s dominance? The Japanese brand, whose sales are heavily
concentrated in the U.S., managed to shake off the family hauler stigma early by loading its
wagons with crossover features like higher ground clearance and all-wheel drive, says Jessica
Caldwell, an Edmunds senior analyst.
“From 1995, Subaru sold an outdoor, go-anywhere lifestyle that matched their cars: all-wheeldrive vehicles that could carry mountain bikes,” she says. “As a result the car had a cult status in
places like Denver, Colorado, and Seattle, Washington. They did a good job defining their niche
and making it OK to drive a wagon. But today you’d say their wagons are very cross-over-ish.””
(Economic considerations, stereotypes)
“That other automakers can afford to develop a station wagon at all is a function of steady
European demand, especially in Germany, where the domestic brands reign. A Mercedes-Benz
spokesman told Automotive News it expects to sell slightly more wagon versions of the new E
class there than sedan versions next year. BMW last year sold 27,811 of the 3-series Touring
wagon in Germany, compared with 3,340 in the U.S.” (Stereotypes, Cultural considerations)
“Jaguar’s chief designer, Ian Callum, has ruled out a wagon version of the XE compact sedan
that goes on sale in the U.S. this year. “The [wagon] market is massively shrinking, and I’m very
sad about it, but it’s a very difficult market to justify,” he said in May, pointing out that German
wagon buyers buy mainly German brands.” (economic considerations)
“Fuel-economy rules devised in the 1970s exempted trucks over a certain weight, making them
the preferred choice over downsized wagons.” (Fuel Economy)
“In 1976 there were 62 wagon options, but the Detroit 3 began to abandon the local wagon
market, severely restricting choice. Imports filled some gaps, but by 1995 that number had
dropped to 44 according to Automotive News data. By 2004 there were just 26, including two
from Ford, one from Chrysler and one from General Motors (a Saab). Now there are just eight
according to JATO’s classification, all import brands.” (Shift in consumer preferences)

Context
So far this semester, we have considered the American experience from various perspectives, and we
have contextualized those perspectives within larger conversations. As you develop your own
theoretical stance within this conversation, a Research Narrative will enable you to engage with your
sources, to contextualize your stance within an intellectual history, and to begin to organize your essay.
Your Challenge
After selecting a research question and conducting further research, you will create a Research Narrative.
Like an annotated bibliography, a Research Narrative summarize sources, here the sources you plan to use
when creating your research essay. A Research Narrative goes on to explain the relevance of each source
to the writer’s argument.
For each source you will utilize, create a Works Cited entry. Below it, write a paragraph (minimally) in
which you both summarize it and explain how you intend to use it in your essay. Consider the
relationships among the sources you will utilize as well as their relationship to your thesis. Do some
sources build upon other sources? Do some sources contradict other sources? How does each source
inform your thesis? What will you take from each? How will it help you to make your argument? Does it
support a particular claim? Will you contradict it?
A Successful Research Narrative Will
•
•
•
•
•
Include each source you plan to use in your essay, a minimum of three.
Utilize academic sources to the extent possible.
Include a full citation of each source.
Include a succinct summary of each source. What claim does it make? How was the research it
presents conducted?
Explain how you intend to use each source to help make your argument.

Context
A research essay allows you to theorize and to contextualize your theory within the specific conversation
it enters. In defending your theory, you will develop it further.
Your Challenge
Prior to creating the research essay, you will have arrived at a research question you have fine-tuned. In
creating a research essay, you will construct an argument defending an answer to that question. Your
answer will serve as your thesis statement. Answering a research question in a full way carries out the
work of theorizing.
The potential scope of your inquiry is wide. You may work within any area, with respect to any issue,
contemporary or not, as long as it relates to the course inquiry.
Your essay will defend your thesis by drawing on the research you have conducted. You may build upon,
digress from and/or counter other theories along the way to asserting your own claim. Your audience will
then have the opportunity to engage with the conversation you further.
Consider your audience. Although this is an academic essay in the sense that it will utilize academic
sources, you may imagine your audience to lie outside of the academy.
