Teaching the Young Child–Field Based Assignments
TE 380 – Spring 2024
Each field-based assignment will be documented and uploaded to Canvas.
Chapter 1
• Interview a local licensed or accredited early childhood program/school, and ask the director or
administrator about the varied roles of early childhood professionals and insights into the complexities
of this work.
• Complete a narrative (two page minimum using APA guidelines) summarizing the interview.
Chapter 2
• Complete the Key Theorist Chart in the Appendix B.
• Copy pages 353/354 or recreate in Word and complete all components.
Chapter 3
• Visit the Council for Exceptional Children’s Code of Ethics for Educators of Persons with Disabilities

• Download the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct from

• Complete a narrative document (two page minimum using APA guidelines) that compares the two
statements in groups, noting points of similarities and differences and identify reasons for why there
might be points that are similar or the need for different points.
Chapter 4
• Select one theorist: Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Jerome Bruner, or Urie Bronfenbrenner.
• Find resources on the internet and school library to explore the life and work of each theorist more in-
depth.
• Prepare a PowerPoint covering aspects of each theorist’s personal life, key principles of their work, and
the impact of their work on teaching today.
Chapter 5
• Recognize and appreciate the many ways each individual brings “diversity” to the classroom.
• Create a narrative (one page minimum using APA guidelines) by answering the following
• Three things you remember about family traditions in your home (daily or occasion)
• Three attributes you would use to describe yourself in broad terms (such as race or ethnicity)
• Where your parents were born and raised
• The family members who were a part of your daily life
• The places you have lived throughout your lives
• Three qualities they would use to describe yourself as a unique person (appearance, personality,
family background, strengths, skills, hobbies)
• The languages you have been exposed to at home, school, vacations, or at friends’ houses
• The way holidays were/are celebrated in your family
