Internship Work at Underwriters
Laboratories (UL)
⚫I was privileged to participate in the wireless testing
program as an intern at Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
⚫UL is one of the best independent and non-profit
organizations in the United States that test and certify
products and components for safety (UL Solutions, n.d.).
⚫It is also the leading non-profit testing laboratory in the
world.
⚫My internship program at UL mainly focuses on the
internship position of wireless testing technical support.
Learning objectives for the
internship program
⚫When I joined Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for my
internship program as a wireless testing technical support,
I was propelled by several learning objectives as listed
below.
a) I wanted to learn how to integrate theory and practice.
b) I wanted to learn how to assess interests and abilities in
the field of study.
c) I wanted to learn how to build a record of work
experience.
d) I wanted to learn how to appreciate work and its function
in real life and the economy.
Description of project or Internship
work
⚫First, I worked on a project that performs, conducted and
radiated tests on anechoic chambers. The purpose of this
chamber is to suppress electronic waves’ emissions to the
outside world.
⚫The testing is done on various wireless technologies like
Bluetooth, WWAN, and Wi-Fi (UL Solutions, n.d.).
⚫When using anechoic chambers to test wireless devices, the
project will perform various kinds of tests, such as performance
testing, characterization, and antenna pattern (Choumane et al.,
2020).
⚫Other tests to consider in this project include interference
testing, mesh testing, and roaming.
Description of project or Internship
work
⚫In this project, I am also working to build, direct and adapt
test setups and equipment to new situations.
⚫Therefore, I am working closely with the project managers to
perform tests for regulatory compliance to guarantee the safety
of wireless technologies such as BT, UNII, DTS, 5G, and
4GLTE (UL Solutions, n.d.).
⚫Overall, this project focuses on how to operate various testing
equipment. For example, I am operating Wideband Radio
Communication Tester CMW -500, which provides efficient
and universal testing solutions for wireless technologies with
cellular communication standards such as 5G, and 4GLTE.
⚫I also operate Spectrum Analyzer-PXA in this program for
commercial wireless communication by analyzing signals that
improve wireless technologies.
Relation between your internship
work and your courses
⚫ Electrical engineering has engaged students by teaching them
wireless communication courses.
⚫Upon reviewing my internship work on wireless testing
technical support, I realize there is a perfect positive correlation
with electrical engineering.
⚫Electrical engineering courses also relate to my internship
work at UL because I am using engineering concepts to
evaluate electrical products through wireless testing to ensure
these products are successfully operated without wires.
⚫I also use the courses to develop test plans and testing
strategies to ensure the wireless technologies meet the
requirements after verifying their performance, functionality,
reliability, compatibility, and standards (UL Solutions, n.d.).
Conclusion
⚫I believe that my internship program at UL has significantly
improved my skills in wireless testing because it fully exposed
me to wireless testing technical support.
⚫My internship program at UL has been highly informative
because I have gained wireless testing skills and expertise that
will enhance the compliance, safety, and security of wireless
devices.
⚫I have learned how to evaluate test performance and test
results.
⚫I have also learned how to interpret test results and record
them accordingly in the test report to inform the engineering
staff.
⚫Overall, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has made it possible
to design and launch wireless technologies such as BT, UNII,
DTS, 5G, and 4GLTE that are tested and approved to ensure
they comply with regulatory standards.
