Week 2: First Major Writing Assignment due by June 19

An Informational Paper for Middle School-Aged Students

***This assignment description is identical to the one you first read in Week 1, when the assignment was actually given. This portal in Module 2 is provided for your convenience and to give you the proper portal to submit your paper to the course site.

The first writing assignment calls for students to write an informative essay geared for middle school-aged students. You will use information from your reading assignment as your source for the content of the essay as well as in the design, development, and actual writing of the paper.

The topic of which you are informing these students is THESIS STATEMENTS, TOPIC SENTENCES, and their CONNECTION in a piece of writing.. This week’s reading assignment will provide the teaching material. You may also want to consult the following pages to be sure that you have thoroughly prepared for these eager scholars: 31, 37, 42-43, 62-65, 74, and 280-281 (In Module 1 Reading Materials from the Bedford Handbook and the videos on Thesis statement and Topic sentence).

As you tailor your curriculum to this specified middle school audience, you may also want to consult pages 11, 259, and 283. Remember that you are using the written word as your medium of instruction and will not be using direct address. I am reminding you of the obvious to also remind you that you will need to adopt an appropriate level of formality in your text. Since you will be writing from the academic third (3rd) person narrative voice, you will not be using first or second person pronouns.

Part of the reason for my choosing a middle school audience is because I want you to feel comfortable in fully discussing Thesis Statements and Topic Sentences without feeling embarrassed to thoroughly discuss such fundamental information in great detail. Coach Lombardi helped remind us of how important the FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE can be. While you are in the upper-level coursework of your major and are quite familiar with using these structural components of writing, I hope you will discover some new facets/nuances about the these fundamental structures that will help strengthen your own writing skills. I hope you have already LEARNED that one of the best ways to LEARN something is to TEACH it!

The specifications of the paper are as follows:

You may use either MLA or APA format for writing. Templates for both formats are included in your COURSE RESOURCES Module at the top of the module list.
Your thesis for your educational essay will be the last sentence of the first paragraph and will list your major points for your paper.
Each body paragraph (minimum requirement is 3 body paragraphs with a limit of 5) will have a clearly identifiable TOPIC SENTENCE as the first sentence of that paragraph.
The concluding paragraph will begin with a restatement of the thesis, briefly summarize, and conclude with a clincher statement that completes the essay.
Appropriateness for specified audience
No narrative shifts/Only 3rd person narrative voice

You will have a portal in Week 2 that will allow you to submit your assignment as a Word Document into the assignment portal in Week 2; this portal is only the announcement that the assignment is made.
