Description
*Assignment one-Teaching children to read in the early years involves a variety of strategies. Very few students start school already able to read, yet from the first day, there are large differences in the reading literacy skills and understandings they bring from home. The ability to select strategies that students can use throughout the reading process can help to ensure that the diverse needs of students are being met.
Now that you have assessed the identified students, complete the “Grades K-3 Research-Based Instructional Strategies” template by designing instructional, intervention, and remediation activities appropriate to the needs of these students. Use the topic Resources and your own research related to the science of reading and Scarborough’s Reading Rope.
Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
While APA Style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
*Assignment two-Once you have gathered assessment and observational data and designed goals, your job as an early childhood educator is to incorporate those goals into daily lesson plans. While incorporating individual goals, you need to make sure you teach state standards and differentiate for your students.
Collaborate with your mentor to create a lesson plan for the whole class that incorporates either a reading or writing academic standard. Complete the “Early Childhood Special Education Lesson Plan Template.”
Work with your mentor to schedule a time to implement the lesson and assessment with the class or a small group that includes your two identified students. Following your implementation, discuss with your mentor the strengths and challenges of the lesson, as well as the next steps for the identified students.
Support your submission with 2-3 resources.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

*Assignment three-One key to success in working with students struggling with literacy skills is successful differentiation of instruction. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a framework that can be used in early childhood to help teachers connect children’s formative assessment results with specific teaching and intervention strategies. RTI emphasizes early intervention rather than waiting until children are not successful. Teachers use early and intensive interventions in the general education classroom before they refer children with learning difficulties for further assessment and special education services.
Review the assessment data from your lesson implementation. For each of your selected students, review their progress on their identified goals. Based on the progress they have made, create at least one literacy intervention strategy to further address at least one of the students’ needs.
Collaborate with your mentor to design a small group literacy intervention lesson to address an area of concern that one of the students in your focus group continues to struggle with. Complete the “Individual/Small Group RTI” activity template for this assignment.
Arrange a time to implement the intervention you created with a small group including at least one of your selected students. Following the implementation, reflect on your lesson, data, and selected intervention, and solicit feedback from your mentor on the implementation.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

DQ1-Understanding the need for balanced literacy instruction is key in supporting all students. Review “The Balanced Approach to Literacy – What Is It and Why Is It Effective?” and describe how you could incorporate both phonics and whole language into reading instruction in Grades K-3. Explain how including both reading philosophies supports the diverse needs of students, particularly those with dyslexia, and provide real-world examples to illustrate your ideas.
Dq2-You are teaching third grade and have just completed a unit on a piece of literature. As part of the data results, 62% of your class did not pass the summative assessment. With a deeper analysis of the data, it appeared that most students struggled with reading standards for informational texts and have not mastered main idea or paraphrasing. Considering the options of differentiation, remediation, and intervention what will your action plan be to support the mastery of these skills?
DQ3-When creating an IEP, many important sections need to be completed. One of these sections is accommodations. What are two examples of accommodations that may be needed for a child with an IEP? Provide one example of how you would address each accommodation.
Dq4-Differentiation includes many different aspects of a student’s day. You have a student who is diagnosed with a developmental disability and ADHD. She is having issues staying focused and remaining seated during activities. What are three strategies for differentiation you could use to help her be successful in the classroom?
DQ5-Explain RTI in the context of literacy instruction. How can RTI benefit students who show signs of reading disability, including dyslexia?
DQ6-Small group sessions allow you to focus on some skills in a more appropriate environment. Using your experiences in this class so far, what are some benefits of small group teaching? What are some disadvantages?
