Seven Samurai film
“Seven Samurai” film was directed by Akira Kurosawa and released in 1954. This film was taken
from Japanese cinema and was one of the most important films that had a lasting impression on
Japanese cinema and inspired a great number of filmmakers throughout the world. As an
example of the affection of seven samurai films, it was one of the bases of Strarges’s film. In this
analytical response, we will dive into the film story, characters, ideas, and cinematography that
made “Seven Samurai” one of the timeless masterpieces.
The film is a story based on an ill-assorted group of gunmen who defend a Mexican village from
a band of brutal bandits. Desperate to defend themselves the villagers hire seven unskilled
samurai to protect them. Also, it shows the villager’s desperation and courage in the face of
adversity. The interactions between the characters show the audience the layers of humanity
which make them emotionally invested in their fates. There has been significant attention paid
to the setting in which the movie was filmed, as it represents an ancient, rural Japanese
environment. The clothing of the characters and the weapons with which they fought were
carefully chosen to represent the situation and traditions that the samurai and the villagers
adhered to. As for filming, the film was somewhat slow to give the audience enough time to pay
attention to each scene. The choice of black-and-white cinematography represents and
highlights the era in which the story takes place and the piercing beauty of the feudal setting. In
addition to the selected music, there were light emotional tunes, which increased the tension of
the audience and affected their feelings.
This essay aims to show how Kurosawa goes beyond the traditional samurai narrative, infusing it
with social significance and challenging the audience to reflect on established societal norms.
This film also highlights one of the most important ideas, which is the principles of honorable
fighting, as in a scene where the competitor confronts his calm opponent with a strong scream
without resorting to using weapons.
