Background
ScenarioYou have been invited to speak to your state legislatures to speak on a recent piece of legislation that deals with an aspect of ECE (within the past five years). You will select your topic and then defend or reject the ideas behind the legislation based on the impact the law has to you and your programs.
Directions
For this assignment, you will conduct research on a recent piece of legislation that deals with an aspect of ECE. You will then create an Ed Talk with a video.
1.Research: You will conduct research on recent ECE legislation (within the past five years).
2.Presentation:
Review some TED Talks to see how they are organized and presented.

Write an outline for your presentation following the EPIC model. You may create a PowerPoint presentation for your Ed Talk, but it is not required.
E – Engage the Audience:
Provide a teaser or a hook that will grab their attention.
Choose information and language that will resonate with the audience that helps them understand your position.
P – State the Problem:
Use the who, what, why, where, when, what, and how questions:
What is the problem? Get it out in the beginning.
Provide local and national data and research that emphasizes the issue as a problem
Who is affected by the presence of the problem?
Why does the problem need to be addressed?
Where is the problem primarily located (i.e. programs, with families, in certain areas, etc.)?
When is intervention needed before the problem gets worse?
MOST important – How are children, families, and the community being affected?
I – Inform about Potential Solutions
Be prepared with some recommendations.
Include evidence to support how the recommendations would be effective.
C – Call to action
Also known as “an ask” – what do you want the audience (individual or group) to act on?
Clearly define what action should be taken and provide a way for the audience to get on board.

3.Recording
Record a video of your presentation (five minutes maximum) and submit the link or MP4 recording.
Use professional language and a professional appearance (i.e., hair, clothing, voice and tone, organized and neat background/environment)
If you create a PowerPoint or other guiding document, all work should be formatted professionally and use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

4.Reflection: Write a one-page reflection. Answer the following questions.
How and why did you select this topic?
What is your personal connection to the topic?
What researched information did you decide to include in your Ed Talk? Explain why.
What did you learn from the Ed Talk experience?
Anything else you would like to share?
Submission Requirement
Submit your conclusion and a link or MP4 for the video recording by following the directions linked below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.
Save your assignment as a PowerPoint presentation or a PDF. Make sure to also include the link to your recording. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:Jstudent_exampleproblem_101504
