Name of activity: Shape Builders
Curriculum area: Math
Brief Description of the activity and reason for doing it: We are reviewing and learning about our 2D
and 3D shapes this week, and now we will use marshmallows and toothpicks to build them on our own.
Developmental Areas and Skills significantly supported (preferably no more than 3):

Language/Communication: Uses descriptive language.

Cognative skills: Identifies shapes

Physical (Gross/Fine Motor): Can hold toothpicks and pick up marshmallows to build shapes
Curriculum Standards/Goals/Guidelines focused on (preferably no more than 3):
K.G.4 Analyze and compare two and three dimensional shapes in different sizes and orientations.
K.G.5 Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components.
Objectives (preferably no more than 3):
To understand the difference between 2D and 3D shapes
Identify (4) 2D shapes and (4) 3D shapes by naming them.
Create models of 2 and 3D shapes with supplied materials
Materials:
Toothpicks
Marshmallows

Playdough
Shape cards
Set-up:
Gather boxes of toothpicks and 2 bags of mini marshmallows.
Each child will need 30 of each which can be placed in a ziplock bag ahead of time with their names.
Introduction:
Children will listen and watch 2D and 3D shapes video and song “These are the Shapes That I Know.”
Teacher will review shapes as a large group by showing model 2 and 3D shapes to class.
Explain to children that they will be building their own shapes using only the materials on their desk.
Procedure:
Children will be handed their bags and begin building shapes one at a time by connecting toothpicks and
marshmallows.
Conclusion (How will you end it and reinforce learning?):
When children have completed at least 4 shapes or run out of materials, the activity will end for them.
They will be able to present their end results and tell about the shape they made. In doing so they will
tell us if it is a 2D or 3D shape and identify by name.
Follow-up activity/Extension:
Children can also work on drawing pictures of physical items that are 2/3D shapes.
Example – Soccer or basketball, Ice Cream Cone, Presents, etc.
Special objectives/Accommodations for differing needs/abilities: Provide shape cards for those still
learning about shapes, they can build on top of the card or by looking at it.
Have materials sent home for virtual learners in weekly binder.
For children with sensory issues who don’t like the stickiness of marshmallows, swap with play dough.

AFTER YOU DO THE ACTIVITY, WRITE 1-2 PARAGRAPH REFLECTION. DESCRIBE WHAT
WORKED AND WHAT DIDN’T . BE VERY SPECIFIC WITH DETAILS OF THE CHILDREN’S
BEHAVIOR.
