Data exercise – 50 points total
Under Modules/Excel Assignment, you will find a spreadsheet named ”ProblemSet1ExcelExercise.xlsx”. In it, you will find anonymous information on past
Econ 120A students. In particular, the spreadsheet will show:
• In column A, the UCSD college where the student is from;
• In column B, the student’s major;
• In column C, the student level (Freshman, Sophomore, etc);
• In column D, the score the student had in the final exam.
So, first download this Excel workbook, so you can work on it. You are going
to use it to organize, display and summarize the data in it. You will need to use
Excel to compute descriptive statistics, to create frequency tables and graphs.
1. (3 point) How many students are there in the dataset?
2. (3 point) What is the lowest score? Round to the first decimal place.
3. (3 point) What is the mean score? Round to the second decimal place.
4. (3 point) What is the mode of scores? Round to the first decimal place.
5. (3 point) What is the lower quartile of scores? Round to the first decimal
place.
6. (3 point) What is the median score? Round to the first decimal place.
7. (3 point) What is the relationship between the median and the mean
scores? The median is lower, higher, the same as the sample mean?

symmetrical, negatively skewed?
9. (3 point) What is the sample variance of scores? Round to the first decimal place.
10. (3 point) What is the standard deviation of scores? Round to the second
decimal place.
11. (8 points) Create a histogram of scores. The histogram should have 9 bins,
each with a width of 10 points. To do so, select the score column, go to
the insert tab and click on the histogram icon. To change the bins number
and bins, click on the bins and in the ”Format data Series” control panel,
choose number of bins. Do not forget to add axis legends by adding chart
elements. Once your histogram is ready, take a screenshot and upload it
here.
12. (8 points) Create a frequency table of levels. We want a table in which you
have the different levels in rows (FR, JR, …) and the frequency in which
they occur in the data. You will need to insert a pivot table for that. To
do so, select all the columns of the data, go to the insert tab and click
on pivot table. On the control pan of the pivot table, drag the variable
”level” into ”Rows”, drag the variable ”level” into ”Values”, select ”Count
of level”. Once your table is ready, Please indicate the frequency of each
level below.
13. (4 points) Compute the average score for each levels (FR, JR,…) using
the pivot table. On the control pan of the pivot table, drag the variable
”Score” into ”Values” and select ”Average of score”. Report below the
average score of freshmen taking the class. Round to the second decimal
place.
