Description
This Task consists of three parts. You will compose a general problem statement and a specific problem statement. The general problem statement is a broad overarching statement of the business problem. It should be clear and concise and presented in a single sentence.
Part One:
The general problem statement MUST begin with – The general problem to be addressed is… (then you state the general business problem)… resulting in…(then you state the negative consequences on the business).
The consequences should provide a broad but clear statement regarding the negative outcomes that result from the existence of the general problem.
Part Two:
Once the general problem statement has been presented provide 4 supporting sentences rooted in the current literature (published within the last 7 years) that confirm the existence of the business problem alluded to in the general problem statement. These sentences should be presented in BULLET format and NOT in narrative form.
Part Three:
The final part of this task involves crafting the specific problem statement. The specific problem statement is a narrowly focused subset of the general problem statement that is practical to study within the constraints of the program.
The specific problem statement MUST begin with – “The specific problem to be addressed is… (then you state the general business problem)… resulting in…(then you state the negative consequences on the business).
The consequences should provide a broad but clear statement regarding the negative outcomes that result from the existence of the general problem.
It’s important to recognize that the specific problem may not have been conclusively demonstrated to exist in the narrowly focused area. The use of words like “possible” or “potential” in the sentence about the specific problem can help mitigate bias.
Note: The specific problem statement can include the specific organization being studied but does not need to.
An example:
The general problem to be addressed is the high level of employee turnover in the retail clothing industry when compared to overall turnover rates, resulting in loss of revenue and reduced profits.
James (2019) stated that employee turnover in the retail clothing industry averages 39% across the nation when compared to an overall average of 21% nationally.
A recent study by Manning (2022) found that employee turnover rates in the retail clothing industry has been increasing over the last four years and pose a significant risk to this industry.
According to Daniels (2023), employee turnover in the retail clothing industry has contributed to a loss of revenue, a significant reduction in profit, and a loss of customers.
Daniels (2021) asserted that a major factor contributing to business failure in the retail clothing industry is the pronounced incidence of high employee turnover within these enterprises.
The specific problem to be addressed is a potential high level of employee turnover in merchandise stores in the northeastern United States, resulting in possible loss of revenue and reduced profits.
