In the previous week, you submitted the topic for your course project. The next step is to consider and describe ways to administer a survey that will gather data related to your course project. For this discussion, answer the following questions:

What type of sampling methods would you use?
In developing your survey, you will create six questions. What are some of the specific questions your survey should contain?
What difficulties do you anticipate in designing a study around the topics offered?

Use the “Eight Guidelines for Critically Evaluating a Statistical Study” presented on page 29 of Chapter 1 in your text to predict issues that might arise. This information will also be discussed in Week 3, where you are given some specific guidelines for these questions.

Before posting, review the Discussion Participation Scoring Guide to make sure you have met the expectations of this discussion.

Response Guidelines

Read the posts of your peers and respond to two. How do your peers’ opinions and results on the study contrast with your own? Do you agree or disagree with the analysis of your peers? Explain.

What type of sampling methods would you use?

The types of sampling methods I could use would be simple random sampling, convenience sampling, and systematic sampling. The one that I feel would fit my survey of which sugar substitute is favored over the other would be simple random sampling.

In developing your survey, you will create six questions. What are some of the specific questions your survey should contain?
Do you use a sugar substitute? (Yes/No)
Do you have any form of diabetes? (Yes/No)
Do you prefer a liquid or powder sugar substitute? (Liquid/Powder)
Do you prefer real sugar or a substitute? (Real/Substitute)
What is your sugar substitute go-to brand?
What is your age?
What difficulties do you anticipate in designing a study around the topics offered?

A few things could cause some difficulties, such as health reasons and why others prefer real over the substitute or vice versa. There are some stronger opinions on Splenda vs Stevia. There are some articles out there speaking of certain substitutes being harmful to you. Some may not have tried all of them, so I did not narrow it down to a specific kind of substitute.

What type of sampling methods would you use?

My study is the effects that COVID-19 had on students’ education and families. I feel like any and all sampling methods could work for my study. I’m looking for students in grades 6 and up, so I do have a target population in mind. I believe the best sampling method would either be a cluster sample or a stratified sample. These two methods would be best in making sure my target population is obtained.

In developing your survey, you will create six questions. What are some specific questions your survey should contain?

Asking the gender, current grade level, and age of my participants is essential to the study. I would also ask specific questions about their educational experiences since the COVID-19 pandemic. Some questions about that topic could be: What grade were you in the year of 2020? What is your current GPA? How long did you attend school virtually?

What difficulties do you anticipate in designing a study around the topics offered?

Some difficulties I have already come across are the survey questions. With my topic of education during the pandemic, numerical responses may be hard to obtain. Another difficulty I anticipate is bias. I am a 6th grade teacher, and it can be easy to come across as bias in this study. I hope to work through these difficulties well so that I can succeed in this course!
