Three sub-competencies that I was able to apply to a variety of different situations during my practicum were: integrity, respect, and fairness.

Integrity is the ability to be honest and truthful during all interactions, both professionally and personally. Integrity is an important value to endorse in all aspects of life. As a leader in the workplace, it is important to be honest and openly communicate with co-workers and your supervisors in order to maintain trust and respect. Leader behavioral integrity can increase the degree of support that employees receive from their coworkers (Choi et al., 2020). When a leader demonstrates behavioral integrity this reduces the uncertainty among the team members who they manage. During my practicum, I observed a manager who called in a one of the team members to place them on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP). During the meeting, this manager openly communicated the deficits as well as areas of strengths, and the reasonings in which they were being put onto a department PIP. Overall, it was a good meeting with the manager’s ability to lead with integrity even though the meeting was not pleasant.

Respect is the ability to treat other with dignity regardless of their position, status, race, or gender. In healthcare, respect is a critical value to sustain in treating patients, and communicating with co-workers, and managers. In clinical care, respect is foundational to the formation of genuine relationships, strengthening clinicians’ moral commitment to their patients and encouraging authentic interactions (Bridges et al, 2021). I was able to observe a provider and nurse interact with one another in a respectful manner even though they did not agree on a medication dosing for a patient who was showing symptoms of a potential sickle cell crisis. This particular nurse was able to advocate on the patient’s behalf with her differentials of: patient’s history of sickle cell, currently is short of breath, pain in extremities, tired, weakness in arms, and skin yellowish in color. The nurse was very respectful in her in communication with the provider, because of this the provider took her seriously and went to look at the patient along with the nurse. In an emergency department, it is imperative to treat one another with respect, if not, this will cause for a lot of issues to rise, some even revolving around patient care. We have to remember, respect is earned, not given.

Fairness is the ability to act in a fair manner without bias or discrimination. In healthcare, when patients are treated unequally based on characteristics that are arbitrary and irrelevant, their human rights are therefore violated. Justice is the central part of ethics and should always be given in consideration of moral lives. The fairness of health services is an important indicator of the World Health Organization’s performance evaluation of health services, and the fairness of health resource allocation is the prerequisite for the fairness of health services (Pu, 2021). During my practicum, I had the opportunity to be part of a few projects and learned how a project manager assigns each member of the team a role. The project manager consider each team member’s knowledge, skill set, and availability without discrimination. During a project, it is important not to show favoritism to one person over the other especially if they do not have the skill set to efficiently complete that area of the project correctly. To often in healthcare, discrimination takes place, it is just up to us a leaders to lead as examples and treat everyone equally.
