Because health care systems and providers are dependent on electronic health records, clinical systems, technologies, and infrastructure, it is critical to have safeguards and preparations in place for safe and continued operations during a system outage or disaster. Business continuity planning is a vital part of any system implementation.
As an informatics team, you have been tasked to research the required resources and high-level deliverables for business continuity planning and disaster recovery of the organization’s clinical health IT system.
Select a clinical health IT system- and a health care organization as the focus of this assignment. The health IT system will be EPIC EHR system and the healthcare organization will be HCA Healthcare
Note: Each group member will be working on their own chosen system throughout this course; however, for this assignment, please choose 1 system for the whole group. You will apply this process to your system project in future weeks.
Brainstorm ideas and discuss the following categories of disaster recovery planning for your group’s health IT system:
Risk Analysis – Infrastructure and Systems and Critical Areas of Operations
Downtime Planning – Critical Areas Operational Processes
Contingency Planning – Data Center and Systems Restoration
Systems and Data Restoration
Disaster Recovery Planning – Training, Testing, Drills
Create a chart with the group’s findings for the 5 categories above. For each category, provide a scenario and then identify the collaborators your team would include in the development, 2 outcomes (goals), and what the deliverable would be. Your responses for each category should be approximately 45–90 words.
Only the Contingency Planning-Data Center and Systems Restoration is needed.
