The WBS should include all products/services required for conceptualization, planning and execution of the event. WBS should be broken down to the level that you consider appropriate for managing and controlling the project. For this assignment the WBS needs to be broken down to a minimum of level 3 for the entire project. Please select one of your level 3 WBS elements and show a breakdown of that element completely to the work package level. Additionally, develop a WBS dictionary for your WBS. Deliver your WBS in indented or graphical form – one or the other. Both forms are NOT required.Need an additional refresher on how to create a WBS? HOMEWORK #1: WORK
BREAKDOWN STRUCTURE (WBS)
ASSIGNMENT
OBJECTIVES
1. Practice developing a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
2. Practice organizing a WBS hierarchy
3. Practice utilizing a WBS dictionary
BACKGROUND
You have been designated as Project Manager of “PROJECT SOCIAL” to host an event for a
professional organization (i.e., Project Management Institute local chapter, Women in
Construction chapter event, Engineering society chapter meeting). The scope of Project
SOCIAL includes conceptualization, designing, execution and post-event cleanup of the
professional society event. Your project sponsor is the professional society president, Prof.
Swart, and she will need regular updates of your progress.
SCOPE STATEMENT OF PROJECT SOCIAL
High level description of project scope and required deliverables is as follows:
● developing concept & design of the event
● selecting a suitable venue for the event (room, hotel, conference center, outdoor
location)
● planning a meal for the event (meal and beverages)
● planning event entertainment (DJ, Band or Speaker(s))
● planning and executing event marketing (advertisements, social media campaigns)
● executing the event (set-up, event, clean-up)
● project management (project management plan, work breakdown structure,
integrated master schedule, kick-off meeting with the project sponsor, weekly status
reports, event closeout and post-event survey)
Please note that the above is a high-level description of the overall scope and deliverables
but is not a specific set of tasks and does not detail the approach to complete the work. That
is your job as the project manager – to prepare a plan that will provide an organized and
efficient way to get the work done and which includes necessary project monitoring, status
reporting, communication, quality control and other necessary project activities. Review the
landscape project example in Chapter 9 of “The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management”
to make sure you understand the components of a WBS.
KEY POINTS
Make sure you use the concepts described in class with the Summary Tasks (any tasks that
have subtasks below them) establishing organized headings for the work and the “Work
packages” (lower level) defining how the work gets done. Subtasks under a summary task
must cover all work activities identified in that Summary Task. There should never be only
one subtask under a Summary Task. Task names should be concisely worded but long
enough for a reader to quickly understand the nature of the task.
ASSIGNMENT
Develop a complete WBS for Project SOCIAL. The WBS should include all products/services
required for conceptualization, planning and execution of the event. WBS should be broken
down to the level that you consider appropriate for managing and controlling the project. For
this assignment the WBS needs to be broken down to a minimum of level 3 for the entire
project. Please select one of your level 3 WBS elements and show a breakdown of that
element completely to the work package level. Deliver your WBS in indented or graphical
form – one or the other. Both forms are NOT needed.
Generate a WBS dictionary for your WBS. At a minimum your WBS dictionary should include
(for all WBS elements at level 2 and 3):
●
●
●
●
●
WBS element identifier
WBS element name
Description of WBS element
Deliverables – Product, service or result created by the work package
Assumptions and constraints (for example: dependencies with other tasks,
equipment needed)
● Owner (could be a team member name, position name or department/function name)
ADMINISTRATIVE NOTES
I realize that not everyone is an experienced event planner, however most of us have
attended an event (party, wedding, conference) and should be familiar enough with what
goes into an event to generate an acceptable product.
There are multiple ways to organize work into a WBS hierarchy of main tasks and subtasks
so there is not one “right answer” to this assignment. Think of the WBS like a written report
that has main sections and subsections. It is recommended to include a set of startup tasks
that could include the project management plan, review by the project sponsor, a kick-off
meeting, and other early activities to prepare for detailed project work.
