Description
Cultural humility belongs in every workplace, school, place of worship, and community. In addition to being aware of the diversity in our world, it is vital to practice cultural humility as you work with individuals, groups, and communities in your professional practice. It can take a significant amount of work, patience, time, and communication with others to increase cultural humility, and even through all of that, it may still be challenging to demonstrate it in every situation.
To that end, many workplaces provide cultural humility training for their staff. In addition to staff training, effective and knowledgeable leaders work to address issues before or as they occur. In this Discussion, you will consider several scenarios that address cultural differences and awareness in the workplace. Through these scenarios, you will consider the elements you would include in a cultural humility training program.
In this Discussion, you will consider several scenarios that address cultural differences and awareness in the workplace. Through these scenarios, you will consider the elements you would include in a cultural humility training program.
The scenarios include the following (make sure you make reference to which scenario you are talking about for each prompt, so this is clear when grading):
Scenario A: In January of 2020, the United States reported its first confirmed person-to-person transmission of 2019-nCov. Public health departments across the country are on high alert and developing awareness campaigns to address questions being brought forth from the community. As a health department director, you have scheduled a meeting of all your leadership to discuss the internal staff communications that will be disseminated in the upcoming days. During the meeting, your leadership team becomes embroiled in a heated discussion on how to approach the topic within the very diverse community the department serves. Amid the discussion, you realize that racial tension within your staff should also be addressed. Many of your team members are of Asian descent, and, as the outbreak originated in China, you feel a need to get ahead of any negative feelings.
Scenario B: You currently serve as a commissioner for a large county. You have received a racial discrimination complaint from a group of Spanish-speaking employees against the director of the health department. The employees cite longer working hours and decreased break time. The county has taken a formal stance to not tolerate discrimination of any form. In a unanimous decision of the commissioners, there will be mandatory discrimination and cultural sensitivity training required across all levels beginning with department heads. The county judge has called a State of the County address for all employees to provide input on what should be included in the training.
