Interim Exhibition Critical Reflection
I have participated and organised some on-campus exhibitions about costume
works before. However, most of my work is venue decoration and show
management, so I want to try some new areas in this exhibition, I chose the social
media part and marketing management. This is a big challenge for me because
marketing is a very big team, covering photography, print and social media
operation. At the same time, social media is also the voice of the whole exhibition,
the exposure will directly affect the popularity of the exhibition, so it can be said
that the social media publicity and the success of the exhibition are inseparable.
During the research process, I browsed a lot of online art websites on the Internet,
such as PACE, SIMON LEE and ARTLINKART. These websites integrate the works of
many artists, and the layout and presentation style changes with the style of the
designers, but the overall feeling is very unified, which is partly due to the unity of
the website’s overall backdrops and text styles, which brought me a lot of ideas.
This has given me a lot of inspiration and some suggestions for presenting different
styles of work at a later stage. The composition of the shot and the way the textiles
are placed is also very important, and will have a very intuitive impact on the overall
style of the post and whether it can attract viewers, so I also visited a number of
offline home furnishing stores to observe where and how the textiles are placed.
We noticed that if we want to display textiles, we should not just photograph the
details of the textiles or show a whole piece of fabric alone, but we should combine
the textiles with clothing, home furnishings and other daily necessities, in order to
let the viewers feel the substantial effect. For example, if the textile is wrapped
around a model’s body and photographed or cut and pieced together into a
garment, the viewer can see the textile in three dimensions rather than just a flat
surface.
I also looked at some of the designers’ ins and the official ins of some of the London
colleges to learn how they operate and how they present textile concepts and
inspirations, and I also found that adverts and posters are the most important part
of the whole social media campaign, as an attractive image will cover all the
information about the exhibition: time, place and theme. After some research I
found that posters don’t have to be flat and static, but can be more eye-catching
with 3D modelling and other methods. In addition, a concise introduction is
essential to convey the core idea to the audience in the shortest possible time.
My research has largely influenced my ideas as this is the first time I have been
involved in a textile exhibition, in fact it is much more complex than just exhibiting
garments, we also need to consider the fit between the wallpaper fabric and the
garments. Mainly my research has made me more aware of what needs to be posted
on social media, and a few conversations with my tutor have made me realise that
this is more than just a promotion, it’s a record and a story line, which is why pre-
planning is so important.
I think as a team leader, my overall planning skills were still lacking, which led to
some confusion at the beginning of our team’s work, and the division of labour did
not make sense, but at a later stage after re-planning and redistributing according
to everyone’s ability, the team’s quality of work and efficiency have improved very
significantly. I believe that every member of our team is very enthusiastic about this
exhibition, we hold group meetings twice a week, and also exchange information in
real time with the team leader of fashion design, discussing what we want to show
the following week to share the progress and inspiration. We are a very large group,
and although it is difficult to coordinate everyone’s time and ideas, it is also possible
to bring together everyone’s strengths and play to everyone’s strengths to
accomplish a lot in a month’s time. Teamwork is a process of building on strengths
and getting help from other members, for example, this is the first time I’ve run an
account, but there are many members of our team who have had experience with
this and will talk to me about the best times to post and tips for engaging the
audience.
If I still have the chance to participate in this kind of large-scale team activities, I
would expand the scope of research, not only focus on textile exhibitions and
research, but also add some spatial design and incorporate some psychological
effects, a lot of subconscious psychological reactions will drive people’s actions, and
these psychological should also be applied in publicity and exhibitions. In teamwork,
I would ask each member what they are good at and what they want to do at the
beginning, ask more questions and discussions, and I should make a complete
schedule at the beginning, and reserve enough time to deal with unexpected
situations. As for publicity, I should have focused more on offline publicity instead
of just focusing on online, after the exhibition I learnt that my friends in
Southampton campus didn’t even know that we had held this exhibition, which
made me realise that I had neglected the publicity in and around offline.
I believe that the exhibition was a very valuable experience for all members,
everyone’s work was well publicised and exhibited and everyone did a great job.
