Description
Compare and contrast writing a psychology essay on demand
Unformatted Attachment Preview
In life and in your future career, you will come across a great deal of “news” which
you will need to interpret and evaluate. Sometimes this material is accurate and
helpful, while in other cases the results are invalid or wrong! This exercise is
designed to help you be an educated consumer of information. You will find a
current (2019 or later) article related to social psychology in the popular press (e.g.
Science Daily, Psychology Today Magazine, Scientific American MIND, or
another publication), and then look up the original scientific journal manuscript on
which the popular press article is based using the NC Library Article search. Any
reputable reporter will cite the original scientist or scientific journal that is
providing the information for the story. Once you have found the article, read it,
comprehend it, and compare it to the news story.
You will submit your OWN essay (1200 words, approximately 5 pages
double-spaced) briefly explaining the articles. The opening section of the paper
should summarize the popular press article. The remaining discussion should be a
critical analysis of the accuracy of the popular press in reporting the scientific
journal article. For example: was the popular press interpretation correct? Did it
leave out important information? Is it misleading or representative? How do you
know? You must demonstrate understanding of the original research article. You
may also wish to discuss the relevance of the findings (for society or future
research) and how it relates to a topic or issue we touched on in class or that you
read about in your textbook.
