Introduction
Often times when issues arise with reporting metrics, a workflow analysis is completed in
an attempt to get an overall picture of what clinicians are doing and identify areas in need
of potential enhancement. You will discover one of the challenges with resolution to a
workflow issue often involves varying stakeholders and what they perceive as the
solution. The work you do this week will crossover to help with your final presentation in
Week 5.
Here is the scenario you face:
You are the informaticist in a very busy primary care clinic. The site manager has been
reviewing her Provider Efficiency Profile (PEP) report and has discovered data is not
being captured regarding fall risk assessment. Because the organization is an Accountable
Care Organization (ACO) and fall risk is a safety initiative for the clinic, lack of fall risk
documentation is unacceptable. Is the problem a workflow issue? Why is the data not
being captured? Who should be completing the assessment?
As you have learned in your readings this week, workflow analysis is an important step in
understanding issues with data capture in the electronic health record. For this exercise,
you are provided a workflow analysis and must come to conclusions and solutions based
on your evaluation of the workflow.
The provided workflow analysis Download workflow analysisuses the swimlane approach
to workflow analysis. It shows the various roles participating in the care of the patient and
activities each role is responsible for carrying out. The example is high level but does
include everything needed to see where the issue lies.
The informaticist is often the person evaluating the workflow and making
recommendations; however, those impacted by the change need to be involved in the
decision making. For this reason, you will include some role playing in your paper. Take the
view point of each of the roles presented and make your recommendations from their
perspective.
As you work on the assignment, be thinking things like:
•
•
•
What is missing from the workflow?
At what point in the visit should the assessment be completed?
Who should be performing the assessment?
