Assignment 2: Conceptual framework
1. Prepare a fully referenced Conceptual framework section.
2. A conceptual framework represents the beliefs on how certain phenomena are
related to each other (a model). The model flows logically from the documentation
of previous research in the problem area. Integrating beliefs with published
research, taking into consideration the boundaries and constraints governing the
situation, is pivotal in developing a scientific basis for investigating the research
problem. The process of building a conceptual framework includes:
• Introducing definitions of the concepts in the model.
• Explicit statements that explain how the relevant and high-quality literature is
being used in the study
• Developing a conceptual model that synthesizes the existing views in the
literature drawn from multiple sources concerning a given situation – both
theoretical and from empirical findings (graph)
• Coming up with a model that gives a broader understanding of the
phenomenon of interest
3. Length: 500 words + graph
IMPORTANT!!! Sources: min. 10 high quality peer reviewed sources (seminal
papers for definitions or theories and recent publications for the current state of
knowledge)

governing the situation, is pivotal in developing a scientific basis for investigating the research problem.
The process of building a conceptual framework includes:

Introducing definitions of the concepts in the model.
Explicit statements that explain how the relevant and high-quality
literature is being used in the study

Developing a conceptual model that synthesizes the existing views in
the literature drawn from multiple sources concerning a given situation
– both theoretical and from empirical findings (graph)

Coming up with a model that gives a broader understanding of the
phenomenon of interest
Introducing definitions of the concepts in your model.
• Phenomenon and related concepts identified
• Definitions are based on peer-reviewed literature
The review includes relevant literature and sources are of high quality

Source focuses on the same topic
Source examines the same individuals or sites
Source examines the same research problem
Mainly original sources (reports of studies that are written by the
people who actually conducted the research) / Only few secondary
sources (literature reviews, theoretical papers, and summaries)

Mainly peer-reviewed sources / Only few non-peer reviewed sources (government reports,
think-tank reports, NGO reports, dissertations,
conference papers, and books)

Mainly reputable sources (academic, affiliation federal government,
supranational organizations, professional organizations, or well- known publishers)
The use of the literature fits the study’s overall research approach.

It uses theories and empirical findings to provide an ‘integrated’ way of looking at the problem

It uses the literature to provide models for how to design the studies and to collect and
analyze data
It can be used to interpret the results in the light of this “worldview”.
