Now the patient has asked you to video chat with her about why she needs the genetic testing for AML. You think this is a wonderful idea because it will give you an opportunity to explain things in a way that the patient will better understand, while also developing your listening, communication, and empathy skills.
Furthermore, since you decided to apply for a fellowship in epidemiology with the Centers for Disease Control, this video chat will be a great example to add to your professional portfolio.
Create a 5- to 8-minute video chat for the patient that includes the following:
A description of the following genetic tests for AML: FISH, molecular testing (including PCR, DNA sequencing and next generation sequencing), including a description of the mechanism of the test (i.e., how it is used in giving a prognosis of AML as well as actual techniques and technology used to conduct the test)
An explanation of karyotyping, including a description of the mechanisms of the test (i.e., how it is used in giving a prognosis of AML as well as actual techniques and technology used to conduct the test)
An explanation of the prevalence of AML in the U.S. population
A discussion of who is most affected by AML, including relevant data based on sex, age, etc.
A discussion of one mutation in AML of DNA methylation and one tumor suppressor gene mutation
Keep in mind that this is a patient, and you will need to explain these techniques in terms that they can easily understand.
Include a transcript for your video as well as a list of any references used to develop your video.
