Discussion Topic 2: Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

Most of you are working towards a career in Health Care. As a health care provider, there are many issues that you will experience that will challenge your moral and ethical values. The following is a long-standing debate regarding euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Background: Jack Kevorkian was an American pathologist and euthanasia proponent. He is best known for publicly championing a terminal patient’s right to die via physician-assisted suicide; he claimed to have assisted at least 130 patients to that end. He was often portrayed in the media with the name of “Dr. Death”. There was support for his cause, and he helped set the platform for reform. He said, “Dying is not a crime”. In 1999, Kevorkian was arrested and tried for his direct role in a case of voluntary euthanasia. He was convicted of second-degree murder and served eight years of a 10-to-25-year prison sentence.

Discussion Topic 3: To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate?

Most of you are working towards a career in Health Care. As a health care provider, there are many issues that you will experience that will challenge your moral and ethical values. Consider the following debate surrounding vaccinations.

Background: The decision to vaccinate for a wide variety of devastating human diseases such as tetanus, whooping cough, diphtheria, and polio has been widely debated for many years with STRONG opinions on both sides of the debate.

With the advent of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, this issue is even more controversial and emotionally-charged with factions debating issues such as the novel production of the vaccine, the safety of the vaccine, and efficacy of the vaccine.

Where do you stand on this important debate?

Are you in favor of OR against vaccination for COVID-19?
Do you think that businesses and employers should be able to REQUIRE COVID-19 vaccinations for patrons and/or employees?
What about other, more “traditional” vaccinations, such as polio, should these be REQUIRED?
Should the activities of non-vaccinated vs. vaccinated individuals be restricted or monitored, such as travel, access to certain businesses/services, or requirement for PPE/masks?

Please be sure to THOROUGHLY explain/describe the reasons for your responses (each prompt response should be explained in 15+ sentences, so your total initial post should be 45+ sentences in length). NOTE: it is recommended that you compose your responses in another editing software, such as Word or Google Docs, then copy-paste your responses into the Reply Box. This avoids the possibility of “losing” your post if you encounter any internet glitches.

Discussion Topic 4: Ethical Issues in HealthCare-Where Do You Stand?

Most of you are working towards a career in Health Care. As a health care provider, there are many issues that you will experience that will challenge your moral and ethical values. Consider the following scenario regarding our ability to cure human diseases.

Background: Our current technology does not allow us to predict exactly how long a person will live. While health providers may be able to predict a “range” of expected lifespan, we cannot know the exact date of a patient’s death. In the future, this knowledge may become available to us. If it were possible to KNOW the date of your own death, would you want to know? Do you think patient’s and their families have a RIGHT to know?

Instructions: Where do you stand on this important issue in future Health Care? Do you believe that people have the right to know in advance the exact date of their death? Should insurance companies have access to this information? THOROUGHLY describe/explain at least 3 reasons for your response. EACH of your 3 reasons should be explained in 15+ sentences, your total initial post length should be AT LEAST 45+ sentences.
