THE PROJECT:
You will be creating an online exhibition using the webpage template of Adobe Express.
The project provides an opportunity to (a) explore a topic in Western art that interests you and (b)
share your work in the form of a small, curated set of images and explanatory text, i.e., an
exhibition!
The exhibition text will serve several purposes: to correctly label the artworks, to introduce your
topic (provide some context), and to develop your ideas paired with your chosen artworks.
PHASE 1
Come up with a topic and 6 artworks. Frank Lloyd Wright’s work is off limits, as he is the subject
of the sample exhibition. Also, do not choose anything that has been discussed extensively in
class.
Some possible ideas might include (but are not limited to):
The career of a single artist, or a phase of that artist’s career • An art movement • The art of a
particular era or surrounding a particular historical event • A particular medium, for example,
decorative arts /furniture /ceramics /jewelry, works on paper (drawing, woodcuts, etchings, etc.),
photography, architecture, landscape architecture (park or garden design), etc. • Women artists •
A pictorial genre such as portraiture, genre scenes, landscape • Thematic subjects, for example,
domesticity, scenes of childhood, scenes of war, death, romantic love, food, the marketplace,
images of occupations (shepherds, dancers, scientists, politicians, laundresses, jockeys, actors,
shopkeepers, etc). • Literary subjects • Artists’ self-portraits
Once you have your general topic and 6 artworks, begin to narrow the focus. What point do you
want to make about your topic? For example: You decide you want to create an exhibition on the

general subject of landscape painting. What about it? A narrowed topic could be the role of
19th-century American landscape painting in the westward expansion.
The process of arriving at your final topic will include:
(1) the judicious selection of artworks; (2) studying those artworks for their subject matter and
applying what you’ve learned about how works of art function, i.e., how an artwork’s features
contribute to its meaning; (3) research, including keeping track of the sources you used for the
Bibliography; (4) note taking, planning, and writing your text.
Kate Steffens SJSU art librarian will give a presentation on art research.
At any point during your research you can contact Kate (or me) for help.
PHASE 2
Building your exhibition in Adobe Express.
Adobe Express is part of the Adobe Creative Cloud available to SJSU students. If you don’t already
have it installed on your computer, follow the instructions at
https://www.sjsu.edu/ecampus/software-tools/teaching-tools/video-creative/adobe/students.php
Use the webpage template for this assignment.
Your title page should show the name of your exhibition and your name. Next, you must have 2
good paragraphs of introduction, approximately 200–250 words.
Make sure your images are in high resolution (as best you can find)
In addition to displaying your 6 artworks, your exhibition will include 3–4 pages of text
The arrangement of your artworks and text tells a story, so think carefully about how you want to
order them. Are you creating chronology? Working towards a grand conclusion? Setting up a
comparison or contrast? The Adobe Express webpage template includes several different page
designs. Have fun deciding which to use (any & as many different ones as you want) to best
display your concept

PHASE 2.5
Maintain a bibliography of all of the sources you consulted (actually used) for this project.
Bibliography instructions to follow in a separate document. It will be submitted as a separate
document on the same day as the final submission of the exhibition.
