Watch the following two videos, one of Why Art Matters: Dr. Linda F. Nathan at TEDx The Calhoun School explaining the significance of art in the school system and the second of Adam Savage speakingMy Obsession with Objects and the Stories They Tell. What role did the arts play in your previous education? Have you had any experiences like the ones Dr. Nathan describes? Does this change the way you think about art in the school system? Why is creativity important? What is the difference in the works being described in Adam Savage’s video and those of the untrained or trained artists mentioned in your textbook? Expand on your answers illustrating your views on the role of the arts on today’s society.

An internationally recognized teacher, author, and speaker on school reform, Linda Nathan is the founding headmaster of Boston Arts Academy, Boston’s first public high school for the visual and performing arts. Under her guidance, BAA has won state, national and international awards and recognitions, and consistently sends over 94% of its graduates on to college. Dr. Nathan is the author of the book, The Hardest Questions Aren’t on the Test: Lessons from an Innovative Urban School, and is currently executive director of BAA’s Center for Arts in Education. In this talk, she explores the importance of the arts as key to a complete educational experience.

2-Audrey Flack’s still life Wheel of Fortune (top) contains objects often found in 17th century Dutch vanitas paintings like Willem Claesz Heda’s Still Life with Oysters, a Roemer, a Lemon, and a Silver Bowl (bottom). Objects in such paintings remind viewers that life is short and transient. Fruit and food decay; glasses are broken or tipped; and skulls imply human mortality. Describe Flack’s use of color in Wheel of Fortune and Willem Claesz Heda’s Still Life with Oysters, a Roemer, a Lemon, and a Silver Bowl. Describe and compare color values and intensities of the two paintings. What do the colors suggest about the mood of each painting?
