CHAPTER 11
Chris Burden, Shoot, 1974. Still. Videotape of a 1971 performance, approx. 2 min. 15 sec.

Slide # 79
Since the moment it happened in 1971, Chris Burden’s Shoot has been variously ridiculed as an
act of masochism and praised as art of great daring and even sophistication. Can you make a case
for both points of view? How does the role of gun violence in American history affect your
thinking?
CHAPTER 12
Jeff Koons, Puppy, 1992. Stainless steel, soil, geotextile fabric, internal irrigation system, and
live flowering plants, 40 ft. 6 in. x 40 ft. 6 in. x 21 ft. 4 in. The Solomon R. Guggenheim
Foundation, New York. Art Archive/Neil Setchfield. Art © Jeff Koons.
Slide #44
There are a number of discordant elements in Koons’s sculpture—the monumental size of its
depiction of a relatively small subject, the fragility and seasonal temporality of its materials, and
the audacity of its placement in front of an important modern art museum. But it has been
extremely popular with the general public. Is this just a function of widespread bad taste? Or
does it reflect something more important about public attitudes to art?
