In this module, you’ve seen how different artists document cities visually and engage with a range of reactions and perspectives to those places. In this journal, it will be your turn. First, you will decide on a city to depict. The only requirement is that it must be a place that exists on Google Maps (for this activity, we won’t be engaging with cities of fantasy or no longer in existence) and is considered a “city” by most reasonable definitions. (There are no universal criteria, but it generally involves a minimum population, population density, and incorporated governmental structure.)

Some ideas for your choice:
A place that is special to you in some way, such as a family holiday spot or your own
home
A place you have always wanted to visit
A place from your family’s past, such as the ancestral town of your grandparents or
great-grandparents
A place that holds some fascination for you but you aren’t sure why
Once you’ve decided on a city, your next decision will be to explore it in one of two
ways: a cityscape or a map.

OPTIONAL: create more than one version of each and/or try bothThis journal/sketch activity combines the drawing techniques you’ve been practicing with the theme of representing urban spaces that you’ve learned about in this module.
Complete the sketch(es) on a separate, clean page (or more if needed). Use Lens, Scan, or an equivalent app to photograph them. There should be at least one page, mostly or completely filled with a significant sketch, drawing, and/or painting.
If more than one page, combine the images into one PDF.
