Description
Assignment ContentThe principles of designs are organizing principles artists use to arrange their composition. The way an artist may use the principles can have a dramatic effect.Find two artworks that make contrasting use of the principles of design. For example, you might find one work that has a lot of unity and one work that has a lot of variety. What is the overall effect of these principles? How do your chosen artworks make use of the principles in different ways? Please look to online galleries and museums to find your examples. There is a list of museums in the LibGuide for Art Appreciation. You may not use the examples the textbook includes for these concepts. You must cite and reference the source where you find each artwork image; APA format is required for all citations and references. Chapter 5: Principles of Design
Chapter 8: Prints
Unit Lesson
In this unit, we will discuss prints and design principles found in art. As you read the chapter, you will notice
there is a wide range of materials and subject matter in prints. There is also a wide range of techniques and
processes that artists use to create prints.
For this lesson, we will look at the design principles found in a triptych, or a work in three sections, of
polychrome woodblock prints by Japanese artist, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Getlein, 2020, p. 72). In your textbook,
on page 185, you may have noticed a similar print by Utagawa Kunisada. Both are third generation students
of the Utagawa school, a group of Japanese woodblock print artists. The Utagawa school of artists was very
prolific. If you search online, you can find many original Utagawa prints available for purchase today from 50
to thousands of dollars.
What are design principles, and why are they important? Getlein (2020) mentions on page 119 that design
principles are guidelines that artists use to make compelling compositions. They help artists make work that
someone wants to look at and, in a way, helps the viewer understand the work. The principles of design vary
slightly from textbook to textbook and artist to artist. We will follow the principles of design outlined in your
book. They include unity and variety, balance, emphasis and subordination, scale and proportion, and rhythm.
We will go over them as they relate to Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s work in the presentation below.
