Assessment Task Guidance Description
Learning Outcomes aligned to this assessment:
On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to:
• Use academic conventions appropriate to business and effective for the purpose, topic,
situation and audience.
• Apply subject-specific language and genres appropriately and effectively for a range of
written and spoken contexts.
• Integrate references to literature effectively with own ideas within work.
• Convey complex information effectively in written/spoken English, which is accurate,
appropriate and informed by the disciplines related to Business.

Task:
Rationale:
In other modules, when you are working on assignments for assessment, you will be asked to search for
and select sources/texts relevant to the topic you are considering. These texts will typically include
academic journal papers, articles from the financial press, chapters from textbooks and, perhaps, video
materials. If you go on to study as a postgraduate, this requirement to search for a diverse range of
sources to support your work will become even more important.
When searching for and selecting sources, it is important that you keep a record of your reading (or
viewing) to which you can refer as you develop your essay, report or dissertation etc. This record should
include not only the relevant references (e.g. title, author names etc.) but also summaries of individual
texts and your comments on the text (including evaluations and comments on how the texts links to other
sources).
This task aims to help you learn and demonstrate the skills necessary to produce such a record. You will
be asked to produce an annotated bibliography – a list of sources relevant to a particular topic, each
source appropriately annotated with a record of its contents.
Brief Requirements:
You will:
A. Search for and select six relevant texts on one of the following topics –
1. Analyse the impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
2. How does FDI really affect developing countries?
3. Select a country of your choice and comment on that country’s inward FDI.
Your search for texts should be conducted through NELSON*. Different types of texts can be selected
but should include at least three articles from relevant academic journals. For each source you will
produce an appropriate and accurate bibliographic Harvard reference. You should also provide evidence
of your search for these sources, using – for example – NELSON or the Library Catalogue (e.g. a
screenshot of your search results), which indicate that you have conducted this research independently.
*Remember you can seek advice from the Subject Librarian on how to search for sources.
B. Write a summary of each text, indicating its relevance to the topic you have chosen. You should
indicate how the text relates or links to others you have selected and provide a brief analysis of
the value or usefulness of the text.
Word count
Your completed annotated bibliography should amount to a minimum of 900 words and a maximum of
1000. Thus, you should expect to write approximately 160 words on each of your chosen sources.
This final task for your portfolio is more demanding than the two previous tasks. Consequently, it is
weighted at 50% when calculating your final grade for the portfolio.
Drafts:
During the module, we will set interim deadlines by which you should:
2
1. Provide a list of your selected texts with appropriate references.
2. Produce the annotations to two of your chosen sources.
We will provide you with feedback on the work that you produce after each of these deadlines. This should
help us to ensure that you are “on the right track”. We will not feedback on work submitted after the
deadline.
Use of Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) within this assessment:
Some uses of Generative AI may deemed as unethical in your assessment. Further guidance on
the conditions for allowable use of Generative AI will be given by the module team.
Please access the following position guidance from University of Northampton on the use of
Generative AI within assessments.
Assessment Submission
To submit your work electronically, please go to the ‘Assessment and submission’ area on the
NILE site and use the relevant submission point to upload the assignment deliverable. The
deadline for this is 11.59pm (UK local time) on the date of submission. Please note that Essays
and text-based reports should be submitted as Microsoft Word documents (.doc or .docx), or
as guided within the assignment. Please access the following guide to submitting
assessments.
Written work submitted to Turnitin will be subject to anti-plagiarism detection software.
Turnitin checks student work for possible textual matches against internet available resources
and its own proprietary database. Please access the University of Northampton’s Plagiarism
Avoidance Course (UNPAC) to learn more.
When you upload your work correctly to Turnitin you will receive a receipt which is your
record and proof of submission. If your assessment is not submitted to Turnitin, rather than a
receipt, you will see a green banner at the top of the screen that denotes successful
submission.
N.B Work emailed directly to your tutor will not be marked.
Grading:
Your grade will depend on the extent to which you meet these learning outcomes in the way
relevant for this assessment. You will be assessed on your ability to successfully address
specified module learning outcomes, with marks allocated based on what is called a grading
rubric.
The rubric is a table which has different statements for how well each learning outcome has
been met, and is used as a standard benchmark so that all assignments are marked equally
against. Please see the grading rubric on NILE, or see the final page of this document for
further details of the criteria against which you will be assessed, presented in the grading
rubric.
