PEER POST 1

My name is Jeremy and I’m pursuing my BS in Cybersecurity. I’ve been a backend developer for many years, and before that I got my Associate’s degree where my focus was the administration of justice. Technology and law enforcement have always fascinated me so I think cyber will be a good fit. Not to mention I have family members that already work in cyber and they really seem to enjoy it.

This is a very interesting discussion topic because I’ve never actually thought about what privacy means to me (as opposed to its general definition). I suppose if I had to define it, my definition would be something like the state of being privy to something to which other people are not. That sounds kind of bland, but unfortunately I’ve come to learn that I’m not a very creative person, and in this case I just extracted the word privy out of privacy and went with that. Generally speaking, when I think of privacy, I think of bathroom, bedroom, home, etc., but even in these cases it’s still a matter of being privy to one’s own actions or experiences without the fear of being judged or observed by others.

I also just now realized why it’s probably grammatically correct to say the word privacy the way some British people do: with the short “i” instead of the long one.

PEER POST 2

My name is Peter Simon and I am a senior here at SNHU. I am working toward my bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity with a concentration in data analytics. My interests include technology, weather/meteorology, video games, and listening to music. Outside of attending university, I am usually working or spending time with my cat. I do not have a lot of experience with cybersecurity outside of the courses I’ve taken here at SNHU. I am excited to see what I learn in the next eight weeks!

In my view, privacy is when sensitive or personal information is kept confidential and made inaccessible to unauthorized users. I believe that individuals have a right to privacy. Information such as personal identification numbers, bank account information, and health care records need to be stored in a way that prioritizes an individual’s privacy. Security measures need to be implemented to protect the stored information, as failure to do so can lead to data breaches, financial loss, and legal penalties. There are various laws in place that protect an individual’s right to privacy. One example is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (also known as HIPAA), which assures individuals that their healthcare information will be protected and inaccessible to those who are not authorized (Office for Civil Rights, 2022, Your Rights Under HIPAA section).
