Introduction

What age can I…? Most of us know that there are certain ages that act as “rights of passage”. 16 we can obtain a driver’s lesson, 18 we are legally considered adults, 21 we can drink, etc. But did you know that according to federal and California state law there is a designated age for people to restrict their parents from viewing certain medical information? The age for this is 12 years old. Teenagers can also talk with a physician about their health without the presence of a parent. This topic has become more controversial in recent years, particularly in light of medical practices such as prescribing birth control and gender reassignment surgeries.
