Now that we covered all the elements and principles of design put your expertise to use!
This lesson will help you analyze and explain the visual elements and principles in a work of art. You are essentially dissecting the art. Figuring out how the artist put the work together, will bring you further understanding of the work, the reasons behind the choices the artist made, how the elements and principles work together in that particular work, and insight into the concept of the piece. Discuss your analysis to broaden your understanding of the work.
Identify, show and discuss the main design elements and principles of composition- How they contribute to the composition, how it works to enhance the meaning of the piece and how does it move the viewer around the piece in an orchestrated way.
**Remember art can range from aesthetically pleasing to commentary whether political, social, ecological, etc. Also we all take our own experiences and cultures with us when viewing artwork. This lends itself to some variation in interpretations. Try to be as objective as possible.
HERE’S HOW TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT:
Look up the image, The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley by Thomas Hart Benton.
Analyze the work, finding the elements of art and principles of design and functions of art that are used in the work.
You will make a slide presentation. Decide what elements and principles to emphasize in slides by marking up the image (see example video on Birth of Venus) and what text to include to complete the presentation in google slides or powerpoint or any slide program.
Make one slide just for the main shape analysis, as in video and Guernicaexample.png.pdf.
Make another slide for a value pattern analysis (like the exercise below example ValuePatternEx.pdf,
Create 1 or 2 other slides to show any visual aides you need to make your point. Circling items, arrows to show directional forces, etc…
Import the images into a slide program and mark up. (it can also be done outside of the computer and photographed or scanned back in) Identify, show and discuss the main design elements and principles of composition- How they contribute to the composition, how it works to enhance the meaning of the piece and how does it move the viewer around the piece in an orchestrated way.
Include text slides with main comments to take us successfully through your analysis of the piece. Do a thorough, concise job. You should have 5-8 slides describing ALL the elements and principles of design employed in the painting.
Save the slides as a .pdf, .jpg, .pptx, only.
Post the presentation to the assignment.

Assignment: Let’s make some art to get an inside perspective on creativity and the creation of art. It is also another way to get to know your fellow classmates.
Materials: 8 1⁄2” × 11” background paper, glue stick, scissors, pencil, magazines, painted papers or solid papers for collage materials
Cultural Collages. Jaune Quick-to-See Smith infuses traditional Native American imagery and mythology with expressive textures and innovative technique, creating both layers of images in a collage format with layers of meaning with her use of symbolism.
Romare Bearden showed a different type of creativity in his depictions of the daily life he witnessed in the rural South and in Harlem, New York.
Create your own layered collage, infusing aspects of your culture to create meaning or in the manner of Romare Bearden or Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, of your campus or hometown environment. In choosing your images, you should consider personal history, culture, childhood memories, and key events. You may include in the collage a photocopied picture of yourself. You should communicate your environment and concepts to others. View other work by the 2 artists.
Write a few sentences on “How did the subject, purpose, artistic effects, and cultural influence all work together to create an effective work of art?”
Complete the Collage assignment in paper or on computer is fine,
take a photograph or scan of it,
Save as a pdf, png or jpg
and EMBED it with a few sentences to this discussion from prompt for a class exhibition!

Craft.
Craft is a form of making which generally produces an object that has a function: such as something you can wear, or eat or drink from. Contemporary artists have blurred that definition by using craft type objects in a Fine Art creation.
Read this Tate Museum article
A good example where an artist incorporates craft as a medium is seen in Kitchen by Liza Lou, made with thousands of beads.
**Then: Provide at least three examples of fine art that incorporate craft as a medium. Be sure to Embed the images. Or See video on Embedding. You can google craft art and artists and contemporary craft art and artists.
